I pray he puts down whatever nurse he's fooling around with and starts typing again. That's what I'll pray for. What a slacker.

Just read through this whole thread. You Aussies are crazy, tough as nails and really push the envelope. Thanks so much for the awesome adventure, you take that heavy bike places I wouldn't even think it could go. Glad you healed up well from the roo crash and I look forward to following your continued adventures.

so a phone call from Melbourne.... Mum was in hospital with heart failure...

guess i wouldnt be going to Finke in 5 days afterall....

i spent the next day on and off the phone to Melbourne... and decide that the day after i'd go to Melbourne.... on my bike...

so i headed off on the 730-odd km ride from Adelaide to Melbourne.... it was winter and cold... and was getting dark by time i got to ararat....
i'd brought everything...except my thermal neck-sock thingie.... and it was bloody cold....

i just made the bike shop in Ararat as he was closing up... and he'd only just sold out of them a day or 2 before...

i went back up the main street and found a camping shop that was still open.... i looked around but they didnt have any..

they did have some nice thermal beanies for $8....

i grabbed one and paid the cashier.... then asked him if he had any scissors...

he pulled out a pair aparently thinking i was gonna cut the tags off...

i cut the tags off..

then cut the stitching out of the top of the beanie and opened it up...

pulled it on over my head and down over my neck... handed back the scissors, said thank you and buggered of towards melbourne...

from memory it was about 9pm by time i got to the hospital...

i stayed for an hour or so, then rode the hour out to mums place and crashed after a long day.....

went back in the next day and mum wasnt too bad.... caught up with Philmeup for lunch and then back to hospital for chats with doctors etc...

seemed like mum would be ok and should be out in a few days...

spent the evening chatting to mum and decided i'd prob leave tomorrow and still goto Finke... but would be a few days later leaving than i'd originally planned..

next morning i popped back in to hospital for a while then headed off the 500ish kms to my house down near Mount Gambier..

i didnt have the 5 days that i wanted to have down there...i had 2.5...

i finished tool tube, waterproofed tent ( i didnt get time to test it though) and didnt have time to change tyres.... which didnt bother me too much as id just done
an extra 1500km on these knobbies that i hadnt planed on... so they were not in such prime condition anymore..

the day came to leave for Adelaide and it was raining.... i packed bike undercover and waited for the rain to stop...

it started to hail...

about 12:30 it was getting to the point if i didnt leave i'd be getting to Adelaide in the dark.... and i've kinda decided there isnt really any need to ride at night...

the hail stopped, i wrapped myself up and headed off in the rain the 400km to adelaide...

barely 25km into the ride, in the rain and fog, i just managed to spot 2 emu's on the road with just enough time to pull up before cleaning us all up... a bit slower
i rolled on to Kingston where the sun broke out... a quick hot coffee and i was off again...

it was dark as i rolled into adelaide.....

my new tyres were waiting for me...

the next morning was wet again i packed and headed off to my local coffee joint for one last coffee before heading off..

(dunno what happened to the just about to leave packed bike photo went...)

Back-pedal a tad...

there was a plan...

Sundowner had lined up 6 inmates to meet at a multitude of places....

and i'm sure (and hope) they'll all pipe in with lie's, photos and other details along the way...)

myself, Sundowner and TonyRDR were heading off from Adelaide... but all at seperate times... Sundowner was due to leave first and
go gold detecting before meeting up with TonyRDR at Marree... i was due to leave about the some time as Sundowner but go a different way
and meet him somewhere between Maree and Oodnadatta

OzBikeDude was coming up from Ceduna and would meet us at a camp about 10km out of Oodnadatta..

Desertdog was going to meet us 'somewhere', at the latest, the same camp as Ozbikedude...

and last but least UncleGra was meeting us....dunno.... Sundowner suposedly had it sorted thou....

the plan was all a bit loose for the first few days, but the definate was you had to be at the
camp near Oodnadatta wednesday night...thurs morning at the latest..
