Question AR Forest Service Roads info?

Looking for info on some FS roads. Is there a map set that can be bought that gives info in the roads? I ride up there in the fall and see a lot of forest service roads cutting off the main track and would like to explore some. Might even like to take the little lady and the Jeep up there someday but have no idea of where to go.

Thanks Amigos.

Maps can be ordered from the Forest Service - that might be a good resource. There are also GPS tracks available if you search through the laying down tracks tread. Others can probably give you better info on the tracks but that might be a good place to start.

You should be able to pic up a national forest map at any ranger station.
Better detailed maps are the topo quad sheets avail from any large map vendor but also a lot of sporting goods stores sell the topo sheets that apply to their local area.

Best be careful if you intend to ride the Ouachitas.. Bumped into a forest ranger there a few weeks back that said the feds had shut down all forest roads and trails south of 132 to any vehicle that is not plated and completely street legal. He said he had no idea why, and no reasons were furnished, just that he was ordered to enforce it. They have also been doing alot of heavy dozer work out there blocking off trails permanently. We are slowly losing our national forests.

Thanks. I was understanding a lot of the NF trails were being shut down due to inconsiderate use. Back in the 70s, we saw our enduro trails go away due to the influx of jeeps. We are now seeing the same things due to the OHVs not sticking to the trails and making their own way.

As for legal, I will be on my GS so that won't be an issue. I have most of the maps in Phil's post downloaded. I remember seeing gates up last year on Mt Magazine that weren't there the year before. Also read on the jeep forum about closures for the reason stated above.

I may be limited to FJ travel before long for a few Months. We may need to take a Jeep Trip. I know some roads in Mid Western Arkansas that would be fun in a 4x4!

Well good luck buddy, you could always go back to street riding.

If you don't make it, I drink your share of liquor.

I'm going to choose to look at this as a "glass half full" sort of thing. I love riding in Arkansas. In fact, I completely altered my life in order to move down here so I could live in the middle of all it has to offer. That being said, it is astounding how little pride and respect some of the forest users around here have for the land and anyone else who uses the forest. Every time I go for a ride, the amount of garbage on the roads and trails is CRAZY! I hate to say it, but I think the invention of the UTV may be the death of OHV recreation in the national forests. Anyone who doesn't think so should go take a look at the ATV/UTV trails out at Mill Creek- it looks like an air strike was called in out there! Mud holes that are 6 feet deep in spots, trees mowed over to create new trails, beer cans, empty water bottles, etc, etc seem to be the norm on a lot of those trails.

I guess closing the trails to anything that is not street legal might help alleviate some of the destruction. Of course, any rules that are made need to be enforced in order to have any effect.

I hope not. I've met a few rangers and never had trouble. Once on a KX250. He looked to see if I had a spark arrestor. No electricity on that bike except to the spark plug. I was wearing a helmet, boots, etc. Not drinking. I was sliding around a corner in high gear when I met him.

Met a ranger while riding with my wife(XR100) and daughter(CRF70). Stock exhausts, helmets, just a family out having a good time. He didn't stop us.

Had a ranger stop me on my 650L a few years ago. He was upset about a fatal ATV accident a few days earlier. I wasn't doing anything illegal so he couldn't do anything to me.
Maybe things will calm down after deer season. I'll still take my wife and daughter out riding. If we get a ticket I'll let you know.

The usfs was started a century ago. The main reason for it was not recreation. It was ensuring a constant supply of lumber. Our economy would go crazy without lumber.

Well, damn it! There goes my theory in my previous post. I somehow completely forgot that there are dirt bike riders that have no possibility of getting street legal, mostly younger riders for which there are no street legal options since they don't have licenses anyway.

I still stand by my opinion that the irresponsible users are and will be the cause of any new rules from here on. I wish there were a simpler way to get rid of the ones that are causing all the problems for everyone as a whole.
