Your job is to hang on and tame it. Any ragamuffin can ride a 4 stroke.
not necessarily true. Depends on the gear ratio (sprockets) lower gear ratio (15/38) more top speed less power, higher gear ratio (13/52) more acceleration and less top speed. try a lower gear ratio if you want more control over the power output but change one sprocket at a time if your going smaller that way you will get the gear ratio that you most comfortable with. also there is balance, clutch and throttle technic involved.look at this video of a wheely on a 300 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5DFyou1upg

actually you can tame it by changing your gear ratio (sprockets) lower gear ratio (example:(15/38) for more top speed and less acceleration. or higher gear ratio (example: (13/52) for more acceleration and less top speed. try different ratios and find which your most comfortable with. there is also some technic to mastering the wheely like this dude on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5DFyou1upg

Or maybe just short shift it and use some throttle control?

well the drill I was trying to do was precisely to improve throttle control

it was as follows
1. go just rolling,
2. clutch in,
3. rev up just enough,
4. clutch out
5. do wheel stand (wheelie),
6. use clutch to avoid looping it

My problem was that using just few revs on clutch out ... nothing for a sec then hell of a pull and kinda out of control
