So the lucky factory guys on the new 450 RR will be:

1. Marc Coma
2. Ruben Faria
3. Chaleco Lopez
4. David Casteu

Having the experience of Casteu to (assumingly) sub in for Kurt speaks volumes about KTM's wariness of the re-emergence of Honda and the potential of Yamaha. Had this been any previous year, dare I say that as much as I like Casteu, KTM would have taken a different direction with a rider they could groom into a leader? Kuba or Svitko may have been a better choice.

As I posted earlie in this thread

http://advrider.com/forums/showpost....postcount=3295

... Casteu's KTM ride deal for the 2014 dakar must have been in place prior to Kurts unfortunate death. Perhaps he was on a "2013 factory spec" support ride... presumeably a similar set up to that which Kuba, Svitko or Grabham are on for this january also.

When the question raised as to whom would take the mantle left vacant after the baja tragedy... then it would seem that casteu got the nod?

And for sure it is a matter - as doyle points out - of massing the most firepower they can for this edition, in order to repel the advances of the red and the blue forces... and not grooming future talen, as i agree any of the three above named riders, or perhaps Taddy... or "Johnny Au" would have made sense?

Doyle makes a good point. If there wasn't pressure from HRC, they probably would've given the factory ride to some of their pet riders.
Johnny Aubert? He left KTM for Beta not long ago.
Balzusiak? It's like asking a 100m-hurdles sprinter to run a marathon. It would be fun to watch.
Maybe Antoine Meo?

Would any rider actually refuse such offer?

Hi ya' balkan

I didn't realize that "Johnny Au" had signed on with BETA...? But they've got rallye bikes too...

With regards taddy... and your comparison to 100meter sprinter doing a marathon. Do you really think he wouyld be too explosive? He's had some fantastic results in endurance events like Romaniacs and Erzberg... I mean, it's not like he is just a stadium/enduro obstacle course freak.

I have in the back of my head that he actually rode a rally a year or two ago...?**

**EDIT: Yes, taddy has ridden both the Desafario litoral (Argentina 2012) and the UAE desert Challenge( Abu Dhabi 2013 7th place) previously

Taddy is exceptional, but he's training and focus is very different then the cross-country rally riders'.
When he raced Romaniacs one year, I remember him saying that it was not easy to navigate and spread himself evenly across few days of racing.
Could he keep to the speed lint on a 500km liaison section?

Speaking of Taddy, you have to see this SuperCross race from a few days ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLgDD...&feature=share
Main race is at 2hrs 39mins, but if you have the time watch the entire event.

How about Ivan Ramirez? Is he on the KTM books?

Oh no, scrap that. How about Jarvis on a brand spanking new Husqvarna?

I would think that KTM would pin their long term hopes to new blood that draws blood right away a la Kurt Caselli. Neither Taddy nor Aubert greatly impressed during their rally stints. In fact, Aubert, as a factory rider for 2012, was extended the gracious offer to pay full customer rates if he wanted to race Dakar in 2013. I suppose that highlighted KTM's thoughts on his future as part of the rally team.

David Knight would come to mind but not sure how his relationship with KTM has developed.

Ps would love to see him wrestle a rally bike around and force it into submission.
