Week 2: We packed green sand into a cope/drag flask and beat the crap out of it on a jolt squeeze machine. We poured aluminum down in and by the time the lab was over, we had our own little Missouri paperweights. Woo hoo!

My mom owned a casting foundry for years. I worked there and loved it. I started off as a dumbass laborer, then graduated to finisher, and finally patern maker and metal pourer. We worked mostly in silver, bronze and aluminum.....

I've always heard;

"Pound for pound, girls out-number the guys in Rolla."

We did do sand cast, but not very much. We mostly did plaster molds. Much more clean and for what we were making most, stuff that was flat on one side, plaster is the way to go. We did some lost wax, and some nice art (sculptures) and mostly did belt buckles, door pulls, Indian silver casting for Najas and so on, and a lot of plaques in both silicon bronze and white bronze and aluminum. I still have some buckles I did way nack when if you want to see them.

Post 'em up.

I was thinking about casting an aluminum ADV belt buckle and mailing it to Baldy (or someone)..

I woke up thinking I had lab today. (I don't.)

So, I was standing outside the room, and someone walked by with a key and opened the door for me. First time I've been in there. By about.. 10:01, I remember I don't really have lab. But, here's some outdated eye-candy for you. (There's another room, adjacent to this that had a new mill installed. I wonder if we'll be going in there. I hope we are.)

..and I have no idea what this is:

[For some reason, my picture of the other mill in here isn't working right now. I'll edit this when it does.]

Testing machine for doing tension and compression tests. They're cranked all the way up but you can just make out the upper jaws that grip the flat "dog bone" type test specimens. I broke a bunch of shit with our Satec when I was in engineering.

Yeah, kinda what I figured, but I didn't see how something could be loaded in tension. All of the (few) ones I've seen look like the one I used last semester:
