I've done 40 miles on reserve a several times

I get the flashing reserve light at about 180 miles where it will typically take 4.4 gals or so. Reserve is worth another 50 miles or so where it will take 5.7-5.8 to the bottom of the filler neck. (I have run the bike dry to check.) Yamaha advertises 6.0 or 6.08 depending on which docs you read, but I can't get this in unless I burp the tank full above the filler neck which Yamaha says not to do - the consequences are minor for a 49-state bike (possibly fuel overflow to the ground), but more serious for a CA bike (raw fuel into the carbon canister).

I like to set my dash most of the time on the coolant temperature, so I could tell it definitely runs hotter.

I don't think bourbon is as readily available there in GrahamD's Australia as it is here in the States... And I know those Aussies like their beer!

Me, I vastly prefer a good single malt scotch to either. That bourbon is just a tad too sweet for my palate. That said, if nothing else is available, bourbon will do!

The longest I have ridden my bike with the reserve on is for about 40 Km. I havent tried to get more kms for not harming the fuel pump when going dry, but apparently I could get even more before that happens.

I see you are now talking about fuel quality. Well, I had to buy low octane fuel twice and it made the bike runs about 5 degrees hotter.

You've probably got the ghist of reserve range limits by now but thought I chuck my pennethworth in . I have tested the range on my UK S10 to dry on a couple of occasions (both with separate reserve fuel). On long distance reasonable pace riding I got over 60miles on reserve to the 1st stutter, but on local commute traffic it was spot on 50miles and that resulted in an engine cut out. So I'd say if you ride with reasonable care you should make 50miles on reserve but if the road/conditions are arduous figure on less.
