You could be right, BUT Yamaha apears to alraedy have the engine and a prototype that could jump in and compete directly with the 800GS, which sold out in the US market. It doesn't take much imagination to think there might be some money to be made even in NA from what is essentially a parts bike.

bike mfg do mock ups all the time???
it call bs on that comment.
over the years i've seen very few mock ups.
car mfg do as they have much higher budgets, bike mfg don't.
when bike present something new, it's a real production bike.

yamaha can make it but i still think that it will not do well in north america. WE are too picky. WE willl always find a reason not to buy it. too heavy ,too road oriented, too expensive, not enough suspension ,etc.etc. the few of us that really want one will wait to get a used one in a year or so. i know that's what i would do .it would have to be a great bike at a great price for me to buy it new.

For what it's worth: I don't need a Super Tenere, I already got one, the XT660Z Tenere, my SUPER Tenere!!! I'll be watching the developements closely, but that's all, I'm more then happy with this Tenere, does everything I want it to do. But hey, there will probably be lots of people who will get this Super Tenere, mostly people who also buy GS or Triumph Tigers and such? We'll wait and see.

The 800S and ST were released first and BMW confirmed an 800GS was in the works LONG before it ever made it to market.. And then there were months and months of b.s. photochop versions of the 800GS and no spy pics till it was revealed, in the meantime the Touratech dude had a pre-production version and he was riding it all over Africa, with BMW markings on it and no one caught it.

Yup, but there were posters here claiming the bike was 'not gonna happen' despite all the evidence to the contrary. Same with the Super Ten.

This would not be a parts bin bike. The majority of the tooling & R&D would be new and will have to be amortized over whatever production run they plan.

The cost of stocking parts, meeting DOT regs, marketing, dealer training and so on makes this bike impossible to do for the US market.

The F800GS was an easy choice for BMW. They already had a ADV following that has been growing since the mid 80's. It started with the 800 so many might even say BMW was returning to their roots. (there is an idea for a F800GS paint job, how about a retro G/S color scheme?)

Even BMW gets it wrong, the G650X series was a "pig in a poke" and they failed to better the old 650 with their new one.

We will not see this Yamaha in America. I wish it were not the case, but I am very certian of it.

Somewhere there is a thread on here proposing that Yamaha is bringing the 660 here for 2008. I'm pretty sure we know their lineup for 10 and it is just as close now as it was then.

Looks like the engine will be, everything hints towards brushing off the old TDM twin. It's Yamaha so it's very possible and also a very wise decision IMO.

That and the fact that Buell has dropped out of the market in the US. With the big losses piling up for Yamaha, it's hard to imagine that they will be adventurous enough to bring it in.

agreed that the us economy has put the brakes on alot of things.
