Btw, I thought the 865mm seat of the S10 would preclude me from riding it - but the soft suspension and narrow seat makes it manangeable (from the saddle it feels shorter than a DL1000, which has a seat height of 840 but is pretty wide).

Yamaha have a 1050cc triple in one of their snowmobiles. It's allegedly one of a few engines being road tested for the new S10 in Italy. It makes 130bhp and 96ftlb of torque..

ive riddin the snowmobile...would make a very nice bike motor.

they also have a 500 twin in a snowmobile (marketed as made from basicially joining two 250 mx bike motors together) making 80hp, now that would be fun in a bike.

That's interesting, as the old S10 makes about 70bhp; if they shoe-horned that 'twin in there a new S10 would be a competitor for the 800GS, and maybe wouldn't take much tweaking of the new tenere chassis. The admins at the S10 forum think the new S10 will be an 'upgrade' bike rather than a completely new model.

Your point is not lost on those who actually venture off the tarmac. If Yamaha seriously wanted to contend the d/s market an 850 or 900 would seem a better niche to shoot for. BMW needs a 20% displacement advantage to make competitive power and KTM have already staked out the high ground.

An SUV that poseurs don't ever ride off the blacktop might be something else.

Take your DL1000, lose the fat plastic body, keep the broad seat, insert minimum covers to hide the ugly stuff, surround those minimal covers with an exoskeltal-like frame that double as guards, sideracks and a rear rack, use LEDs for turn sigs and stop-lamp, give us big twin headlights and provisions to add auxiliary lights, use 18" rear and 19" front with DOT knobbies, fully and remotely adjustable rear spring preload, dual discs up front, defeatable ABS, heated grips and seat, two 12V outlets, adjustable foot controls with wide toothy foot pegs, 6-speeds, a high mounted undertail exhaust, a meaningful bash plate, a 7-gallon fuel tank, and shaft drive. And sell it cheaper than the rest of the giant adventure bikes. Build it...I think they will come.

Dear Suzuki,

Take the Hayabusa motor and frame, put a proper sport touring fairing on with higher bars and windshield. Make the pillion seat slightly bigger, with lower pegs. Add color matched panniers and a nice rack.

Sell by the gazillions.
