So were you trying to figure out where to pack the leaf blower in that pic? If you could run it on 12V it could provide the extra thrust you need in your next drag race.

Well Cug, you're right about that. I can't stand BMW junk. Why? Because I spend too much time fixing it. Wife's bike, F650GS.

Yeah sure, lots of BMW owners talk about having good results. A lots of them don't. If you really ride the bike, you're spending some serious coin on repairs or 'service' when compared to almost any Japanese brand.

@Pluric - No offense, but you're sort of a stand out in how you ride and have needs that I wouldn't call mainstream.

As for consulting for BMW, I have enough manufacturing experience, (25 years), to easily save them millions. And I'd love to go in and listen to those morons try to justify their business practices and manufacturing processes, never mind the designs. If you truly believe BMW offers solid designs on their bikes, take one apart. They offer a very feature rich bike that's wonderful to ride, but it goes down hill from there.

Ask to see the Puma letters for any particular bike, and the fixes. Oh wait, they don't have fixes for most of the Puma letters... Then they mysteriously disappear from the system. P/Ns that don't change when the parts do, with zero info to even the dealers on what changed. "just use up the stock on hand, then start using the new parts" No regard for installing parts they know have issues and will cause the customers down time in the future. New parts to correct known issues, but no mention of that to current owners, you just find out when yours fails and they replace it with the updated or re-designed part. Over priced parts sold in "assemblies" that include items completely unnecessary. Like the $1000 stator for the F650GS that includes a new flywheel along with the actual stator. I've never seen a flywheel wear out. And you can't buy either one separately, so it's a just wait until the next one burns up to get the updated one.

I have a diehard BMW friend that raves about the bikes and has never had a problem, (except when you press him, 2 FD failures, a transmission failure, and several more minor issues that he 'forgets about'). He trades it in when the warranty expires every single time. I asked him why and he went into a long rationalzation about how he enjoys a trouble free experience and likes to always have the newest version of the bike. Even though he went thru 3 1200GSs in 2 years, trading in just before the warranty expired for mileage, with no changes in the bike's design to speak of. He's got the money to do that. I sure don't. Good for him. He also trailers his bikes to a dealer almost 800 miles from where he lives, trusting only that dealer to do all of his service, including oil changes.

If it works for you, great. Sorry for the rant.

I have to say one of the reasons I don't have a BMW in the stable is because
of my riding partner on the Alaska trip. Brand new GS that was plagued with
problems the whole trip. I was really surprised. He of course replaced it
with another two since. Something to do with the name methinks.

I'm still impressed with the bike when I ride it, just choose to err on the
side of caution. Plus I genuinely like my Yamaha.

The 6000mi valve adjustment interval on the 1200gs is a deal killer for me. Yeah, they're easy on that bike, much easier than on the Tenere. But damn, that would be a couple of times a year. I sure couldn't afford to pay someone to do it that often...

At 24,000mi, I can afford to pay a shop to do it.

On the re-flash front, I just tried some sixth gear roll ons. It will pull pretty cleanly from 1500rpm in 6th, and really cleanly from 2000rpm on up. Also easy second gear starts and can even start in third gear with a little clutch slippage. I'm still happy! Then again, it's a black one, so I'm always gay, er happy.

How many miles on the F650GS? Twin or single?

If you're not past 50k yet, you will lose the stator before you do, most likely.
