I really, really want one of those '60's tribute P-90 Les Pauls! Make mine a honey burst.
Meanwhile, my current 1960 Classic:

I'm really impressed by how they sound. Super-low action on them too. Sounds great through that Fender Deville Reissue, too.

Dear god. I just realized I was thinking, I bet it would be cool to build a tube amp or two.

Then I went and started looking up schematics.

Then I got excited..... Then I realized I don't have a damn workbench. Fook.

So my big tube head went out the other night, and I'm in no hurry to be that loud. I've got one of those original Crate amps that's actually in a crate, but it sounds pretty terrible. I'm thinking of buying a small kit and fitting it in the chassis somehow.

Anybody with amp building advice, please holler at me before I break something.

If you don't want to hunt for all the parts there are some nice kits out there. Otherwise, you can but just the specific board and chassis and go from there. There are a bunch of kits available though. Mainly Fender's and Marshalls. Keep in mind that if you want quality parts, the build can get expensive. Something simple like a 5C1 (Fender Tweed Champ) without speaker and cab is still going to be a couple hundred. The 5C1 is probably the simplest kit out there. It's only 5w but a Class A tube amp. No reverb or tremolo. There are clones for 15w Fender DeVille, Marshall 1974x 18w, 20w Fender Deluxe, JTM45, JCM800, Super Lead, Fender vibro's and reverb's as well.

There is also http://www.ax84.com/, if you don't want to built a 'clone'.

I think my issue is figuring out the logistics of fitting something else into the chassis and retaining dual inputs, a single out, gain, reverb, presence and a treble/bass and whatever else I'm forgetting. I'd like it to have the useability of what's already in there, but just sound better. My understanding is the circuitry that's in there is just plain wrong for good sound.

Thanks for the links. I've seen those kit shops but ax84 looks interesting.

I just looked up your amp. If it's "The Crate", you'll be replacing the whole chassis. Figure out what features you like and find an amp kit that has them. If you can't fit it in the chassis then make the combo into a speaker cabinet and put the amp on top.

It's a CR-IIR, so the second generation + reverb I think. It's not an expensive amp or anything, but if I can make it look like a sleeper that'd be neat. The issue I'm having is getting chassis dimensions from these kit sites.

I'd imagine just a kit with some chassis/pot mods would fit up fine with some wiggling.
