Need route advice please

Hey guys, I'm sitting Cabo waiting out Lorena and have a ferry crossing to Maz booked for Sunday. I hoping for some advice from the collective.

I'm trying to figure out a route for the mainland. I need to be in Chetumal by Sept 29. I think I am going to need a tire so Guadalajara is probably in the cards. Should I go to Durango and then inland to Guadalajara (what's the current safety of this route)
Perhaps direct to Guadalajara then back to the coast to Puerto Escondido, to Oaxaca, and from there need some ideas.

Having an awesome trip so far, hoping the storm doesn't cancel the ferry!

Dave

All paperwork (FMT & TVIP) can be done in Naco on the weekends?
Good to know!

DRRambler , do you have a PAPER map of whole Mexico?
Simply pick any road you think looks interesting and sort of gets you
in the direction you want to go and... explore
As a DR rider you would really enjoy the all weather road beginning as
state highway 54 at Fresnillo then all the way across the sierras
thru Huejuquilla, to Jesus Maria , Nayarit and to Mex 15 north of Tepic. It is almost all paved by now
Any road is fair game you have 3 weeks to reach Chetumal , yes? Enjoy

Thanks Sjoerd,
I have a map of southern Mexico that is pretty detailed. There certainly are a lot of choices! The storm looks like it's breaking up here in Cabo so now I no longer have to worry about the ferry and can concentrate on the mainland.

Trice: I looked for Esther when I was at Palenque. No luck.

So,you are buying a Ural! Good move, three wheels, reverse gear, driven hack wheel, easy to work on, not too fast and you can carry Salma and all of her cosmetics and clothing... Bet she looks good in a duster, goggles and a "bean pot" helmet.

She's been a bit more mobile since I bought her the Burgman

Hi DRRambler. I saw your RR. Looks like a good start!

The road from Mazatlan do Durango is somewhat dangerous in terms of truck traffic, but it's a lot of fun! One of the funnest rides around, anywhere! It usually rains this time of year in the afternoon, so the earlier you start the better. Weekends have a little less traffic than weekdays. Actually, the truck traffic is not really that heavy, it's just often in the wrong lane. Along that road, Daniel's Restaurant in the little silver mining town of Copala is a nice place for lunch. Make sure you see the little church in Copala.

From Durango you could go to Zacatecas and Guanajuato, both very nice and interesting colonial cities. Then you could go to Guadalajara. Guadalajara has a few nice things to see like the Orozco Murals, but it's a big pain to get in and out of and you definitely don't need to go to Guadalajara to get a 17" tire.

I saw a 17" Metzler Tourance at the Honda dealer in Durango yesterday. It was about 4000 MXN, which is par for the course for a quality tire in Mexico.

If you are more into riding than seeing the cultural sights, you could head SW back down to the coast through Jesus Maria from Durango or Fresnillo, as Sjored mentioned. That area is epic but somewhat isolated.

The road down the coast from Mazatlan to PV is kind of boring. HW 175 from Oaxaca to the coast is very nice.

I'm normally in DGO but out of town this weekend. Give me a shout if you are in town next week and want to meet up.

SR
