Changing the thread title without notice or explanation seems lame to me.

Traveling in Mexico sounds like something from A&E.

At the very least, it should have been "Riding Mexico" or "Riding in Mexico".
Next thing you know, they'll be a whack of Lake Chapala real estate agents, life coaches, retired bureaucrats, and self-important Euro naturalist nudists, and trustafarians telling narco stories on here while clucking their collective tongues spreading urban legends. If I wanted that, I'd read a Dan Diego post.

Well!!! at least He or Them responsable for changing the threads name should have given notice about it, and what are the motives to do it..

I support the use of the original name.

A Salomonic way to paliate the damages of changing the name (even the thread starter could´nt find it). Will be to add the IMS title alongside the new name.

When riding in Mexico you could come around the corner and find the road blocked by guys with guns. Understandably, your blood pressure rises, and your spidey senses kick into high gear.

But wait, are they the cartel? Are you going to be robbed or kidnapped?

Fuerzas Autodefensas - "Self Defense Forces" - are springing up around Mexico in response to the cartels. Read the article about who they are, why they're forming, and where they're concentrated.

Knowledge of what's happening helps with situational awareness.

Just like riders who encounter "the rope across the road" for the first time - they think the gig is up. Then they realize its the local campesinos looking for a few pesos for filling in pot holes on the bridge.

A little time spent keeping up with culture and politics gives you perspective.
The Guardian is carrying a similar story.

The BBC also finds it news worthy.

Unless the thread title violates site rules (and I can't think of one that ever has, certainly Is Mexico Safe? does not), or the OP requests a change, a unilateral change is unwarranted.

This all said, as suggested before, send a polite PM to one or more of the Trip Planning moderators. They may not be reading these posts.

I personally prefer the title: "Is Mexico dangerous?"

Is Mexico safe.

What's the "rope across the road" thing? Explain please. These vigilante groups, I assume they pose little or no threat to the out of country motorcyclist, since you pose no threat to them.

Comments from the locals?

And in response to whomever said, if you look at their guns, you can tell who they are ect...to me a gun is a gun, I can't differentiate between one or another, just that ones short, and ones long. All I would see wouLd be a guy with a gun, period.

I was wondering what happened to the thread title. Kinda lame changing the title without at least dropping by to explain it.

The rope across the road is used by different people to try to get propinas or tips. Road workers use it and people collecting for the Red Cross and other causes do it. It is not malicious, just annoying. The gun thing - I'll defer on that
