SR,

You need to meet up with ChangoGS. He is ADVrider's stealth gold prospector and stealth motorcycle god.

Not sure if its been mentioned but,

on the news today they were talking about the jet-skier on falcon lake. The investigator on the mexican side was kidnapped and his head turned up in a suitcase. Makes me wonder if maybe it did happen the way she said.

If so, was it a case of mistaken identity? They interviewed a security specialist he said that maybe they were thought to be a couple of fed agents out investigating traffic on the lake. That would explain them letting her go when they could have killed her also. They realize what they had done and let her go.

I would like to know the motives before my next trip into mexico. My concern is that nothing gets done and it gives the narcos a sense of freedom to do what they want with americans.

SR and i had a chat a couple of months ago in sombrerete about the reasons they wont go after americans, i wonder if this will change their minds.

I think it's a bit of a stretch but it's possible. For one thing, even though their truck had Mexican plates didn't they park it on the US side? That would mean that the Zeta-wannabes have someone on the US side who is spying and communicating and connecting the people into what they drive and boat. Not impossible - we had US cell phone coverage when we were at the ruins of Old Guerrero - but not easy either.

What I find intriguing is that Ms. Hartley steadfastly refuses to go into Mexico to make a police report. She's not naive - they lived in Mexico for 2 years - but she won't cross to C. Aleman or wherever they told her she needed to go to report this. It makes me wonder if she's afraid that she is going to get arrested for something.

It will be interesting to see if the bodies of the junior Zetas show up. That's going to be your sign as to whether the Zetas do or do not support the shooting of tourists.

Her lack of wanting to cross over is interesting. I think i too would be rather nervous about going over given the circumstances. I wouldnt put it past the bad guys to have scouts watching traffic in and out of falcon lake. Before the whole pirate thing came up, as far as 5+ years back there has been cases of poaching where boats would come over and illegally fish the US side of the lake. Game wardens were enforcing this issue. In one form or another there has been a heavy law enforcement presence on the lake. It would make sense to have look outs on the US side watching for activity. They couldve been mis-identified as cdg by the lookouts.

Zetas have been working that area for awhile. Not sure if you recall the oil field workers having their f250s stolen from them as they were opening gates to get to the fields. They claimed it was Zetas.

That would be really fun, and adventurer, ride as much as possible a high chances gold route on the bike (and some hiking), and return with at least one single grain.

Talking to a client today describing my planned initiation trip into Mexico this winter. They spend the winters in the Mazatlan area and mentioned that one of their friends in the same RV Park was shot in the leg last year by some locals who tried to rob them and steel their car. Then they made the comment that the guy that was shot showed off his wealth a lot - million $ motor home, fancy car, etc. I asked them if the car they were trying to steel was a big SUV like a suburban and they confirmed that. Asked them if it was black . . . yup, and darkened windows too. Based on what I've read here, sounds like the guy was asking for it.

I'll be heading for Mexico in a few weeks and again right after Christmas. Still looks manageable to me. I'll be leaving my jet ski at home. My Suburban, too. Wish I had a million $ motor home.

Still hoping to close the KLR deal soon so I can ride that to Mexico instead of the $30K H-D. Even so, I never felt like a target while riding the Harley last spring. Even when riding solo.

Bingo!

We've been looking at new sedans and SUVs. All in various shades of silver.

Mazatlan used to be a pretty safe place for tourists, but then again there is a fair amount of trouble in Sinaloa. Folks don't talk about the Sinaloa Cartel because it's from Durango, let's put it that-a-way.

The military has offered an escort. Which means ... yeah, I know ... that the military might become a mobile target.

It's unreasonable to expect the Mexicans to do much without a formal report, just as it would be unreasonable to expect the US to do much based on 2nd hand information they would be getting primarily through the newspapers.

Like I said, she lived there for 2 years. She knows the system.

As I understood it, if you weren't somehow related to the trade, they left you alone. Was that the gist of your conversation?

I've been planning a trip to TDF and it seems like things just get worse and worse. And I don't watch the news. Nobody in the U.S (friends/family) think it's a good idea, and none of the Latin workers that are here (I live in Phoenix) think it's wise either. In fact, every one I've spoken to has family or is friends with people who have been killed.

Part of me thinks that's just ludicrous that it could be that dangerous, but if they're killing journalists who try to report the facts, how could people on the outside (like me and most of us probably) know? It's a solo ride - not sure if that makes a difference or not. Just nice to have an extra set of eyes to leave on the bikes if you want to make a stop someplace.

Anyway, it's enough to make me reconsider Phoenix to Rio for Dublin to Moscow...

Did you hear what happened last week at la mina La Colorada in Chalchihuites? Pilot185 this is the mine by were we were riding.

20 truck fulls of armed men attacked the mine and stole $3 million USD worth of dore bars (unrefined silver).

I thought these kinds of things didn't happen in Zacatecas? What can you do?

Saludos
SR
Several years ago when I was working on the PEÑOLES mine of Fresnillo,
a couple 18 wheeler trucks were highjacked, they were fully loaded of silver just out of the processing plant, and ready for casting as dore bars in the Torreon plant.

But back in that time there was not all drug war as now, actually not at all so much violence (or was it less media communication?)

I think the drug cartels certainly do not ride adventure bikes and most probably do not depend on the 50 bucks they steal from a bike traveller. Never had a problem in Mexico ever. 50000 k in 3 years all over the place. Maybe skip the shiny HD. Better serves as a living room table anyway :-) Don't ride at night. Crossing cows and unlighted trucks are the real dangers in Mexico.
