I get my peaceful afternoon in N. Progreso today. Just me and a bucket of beer at a bar, watching the television for a few hours as SWMBO'd plays the video poker machines at the little casino down the street.

That poor SOB in the video is going to rupture himself if he keeps trying to lift his bike that way!
Then he won't be riding anything.

I totally forgot to mention this........

Last December, while following this thread Arte posted a picture with a fellow inmate who was traveling from the Ukraine and going around the World.

Shortly after Arte contacted me to ask if I knew of places in Tulum where Valerii could stay, that were nice and inexpensive, I immediately felt for him as inexpensive no longer exists in Tulum.

At any rate, we met up while he was doing laundry in Playa and after talking a bit he mentioned the console of his bike was falling apart, so I took him to a welder to get it fixed. We then went to Tulum to look around and unfortunately everyone wanted well over $100us for even the most basic of accommodations. After dark I asked him if he had a place to stay for the night, he said he'll make do, but I insisted that he should stay with us for the night and to figure things out in the morning.

After 1,000 bottles of wine he tells me that his girlfriend (now fiancée) was coming in from Russia to see him which was why he wanted to go to Tulum. He wanted a beautiful beach, sunshine (they are from Russia after all) and to find the most romantic of places to propose.

So I said: "Why don't yopu grab my tent, inflatable bed, sheets, pillows, the cooler etc etc etc, we then drive down there tomorrow and we setup camp for you. When she arrives tomorrow you guys can live like bohemians in Paradise. I am sure she would love it, it's -40c in Russia right now...."

And so we did. We set up his camp ground and they stayed there for 4 weeks and did not want to leave.......

So, every time I see this thread now, "Is Mexico safe?" I cannot help but think of how Valerii felt while in Mexico........ I think he would agree that it is pretty friggin' safe!

Valerii and his awesome African Twin

The welding job

He took his entire wiring and console apart in less than 4 minutes; he then put it together in less than 5 minutes. He told me "If you want to ride the world you need to know your bike inside and out..." After that I felt bad leaving my driveway

His rough experince in Mexico:

(EDIT: I forgot) :

Thank you Arte for being a great ambassador to your Country.

More of Valerii's adventure can be found here (in Russian, but the pictures are universal......)

Hopefully you'll have it ready for a long weekend down south come late April.

Actually I lost contact with Valeri, he asked me to help on get him some spares, I got him the estimated costs to cross them and ship them to playa del Carmen, but never got an answer back from him.
Hope he is doing fine. Do you know if he ever got married at tulum?

Valerii is riding to his fiance in Ukraine to get married.
I was riding with him for two weeks in Central America.
He is in South America now.

I am northbound in a few days...with a new stator installed in my WEE Strom. Whew!

Hope to see you, Arte, and other riders along the way, too.

He proposed in Tulum, I think the wedding will be in the Ukraine in September or October.

Averii's last blog is from Columbia, he may be farther South by now.

The parts were supposed to be shipped to my house, he did receive some parts from the States, a new visor and some other things that I cannot remember. He was looking for tires which are impossible to find in Yucatan or Quintana Roo and wanted to have some shipped to Playa. I am still looking/waiting for knobbies for my S10!

I guess he was able to purchase tires somewhere, there is a picture with a brand new tire still wrapped in his hotel room

I'm thinking of hooking up a headlight modulator before I go...is this a wise thing to use in Mexico?
