Common sense should direct your paths in old Mexico these days. Avoid border towns as much as possible, stay out of non-tourist areas (especially after dark). Do NOT buy or try to buy drugs, it may seem obvious but nothing can put you in harms way quicker.

I made a trip to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) in November and had a great time by following the above. Good luck.

Is England Safe - I guess its all relative.

Thousands more police officers flooded London streets Tuesday in a bid to end Britain's worst rioting in a generation as nervous shopkeepers closed early and some residents stood guard to protect their neighborhoods. An eerie calm prevailed in the city, but unrest spread across central and northern England on a fourth night of violence driven by poor, diverse and brazen crowds of young people.

Any one interested in a ride from Brownsville or thereabouts down to Xela, Guatemala Jan 2, 2012?

Also can a guy leave his bike in Guatemala and pick it up 10 months later and keep going south? Or does the entry permit expire after so many days or time period?

Thanks

No, I think it's fully paved, hardly any potholes

tricepilot,

Thanks for the reply. I guess my question was not very clear. I am not concerned about potholes. It is my understanding that it is best to avoid border towns and highways. Also, I have read a few posts stating that from a safety issue it is best not to ride Hwy 2 on the eastern side of Mexico, referring more to SUVs and Vans than to motorcycles. To rephrase my question, is it safe to travel by motorcycle on Hwy 2 in western Mexico, or is this another border road that is best avoided?

Ok on a serious note, any Mexican highway that parallels the border, close to the border, is cause to raise your awareness. The border zone, close to the border, contains drug and human smuggling routes and turf, certain areas more than others. For example, Mx 2, SE of Nuevo Laredo and all the way to Matamoros, is a segment I cannot recommend as cartel factions have virtually taken over several of the towns on that route and even daytime travel carries a higher than normal risk.

Your particular section may be fine during the day, listen to what else is posted here, and do a Google search.
