Kantuckid: I honestly don't know why he left town! I can think of lot's of reasons for it, but I am not going to speculate on anybody's comings and goings on an open forum.... I have never met Glenn, I have only heard lot's of great first person stories about him and his good works from (the gang) as he is on the same sunday riding gang E-mail list....

As for leaving town! Why did you not ask me why I left Seattle... the truth is I really don't know why I left that town or the one before that... etc.... how I got to Alaska? shit I am still trying to figure that one out too....

Holy cow Kantuckid... why does anybody do anything???? I mean have you got your life planed out till your last breath??? shit I don't know where my next one is coming from!!!!

My offer still stands to you also... come on down and the first beer is on me......

Yep, and they will also have one mounted in the back of the truck or hummer type thing they also usually park nearby.
You can hear what one of those sounds like on a city street in Veracruz on a YouTube video.

They also usually have a thick metal shield with thick bulletproof glass that is on wheels and they can move it around easily and return fire from the side of it. I had a good look at all of this while I was stopped about 10 days ago.

In this video, listen for the gunfire at the start and then listen for the distinct change when they open up with the turret mount machine gun. If you speak Spanish, listen for the exchange between the military and the reporter.

Here is a longer version, again pay attention to the dialog.

Now that was a shootout.

Around here the Panhard armored cars are popular.

Which, incidentally, I would think would be one way to spot the "real" military vs. the cartels, since it's been established that the cartels are wearing faux military uniforms these days. The cartels may be able to duplicate the look of the pickup trucks and the Freightliner trucks that the legit military uses, but I doubt if they have many Hummers or Panhards at their disposal.

The Panhard VBL, for your viewing pleasure:

The ones I have been seeing look a little different than that. They are light grey with a heavier and more rounded body.
Kind of like a stripped down armored car type thing. No, I won't be asking them to pose for a pic in front of one any time soon!
If you think ADV motorcycling is risky here, don't take the midnight bus from San Andres Tuxtla to Mexico City, they stopped an ADO bus at 1am near Lerdo de Tejada south of Alvarado and boarded it with AR-15s, masked, and had boxed in the bus with pick ups. They beat the driver and then ordered every one off the bus and then on again later.
Strange event.

I've spent almost all the winters the last 10yrs in Baja for between 1 to 4 months at a go. I camp 99.99% of the time - most of that free camping in the desert or on beaches. I've left my camp setup for weeks and left it unattended for days with no hassles. I've never been hassled by the military and only had one run in with the cops when I actually did blow a stop sign.

Mexicans have been nice to me on so many occasions I can't count them all. They have stored my 4x4 safely while I kayaked down the coast for 2 months and would not take payment. They have given me rides halfway up the peninsula and would not accept payment beyond a Coke.

I don't hang out in TJ, Ensenada or Cabo as they have the same problems big/touristy cities do everywhere on the planet. La Paz is a cool big city to spend time in and there are loads of great small to tiny towns to check out.

I can't speak to mainland Mexico as I have only been there once 20yrs ago, but Baja is as safe as the US/Canada probably safer in most cases.
