]McFoil, how important is it to avoid Mexico city.?
To really really avoid it ...
from Queretaro go east on Mex 57 then step over onto Mex 45 which then joins up with Mex 85 and runs to Pachuca, all nice high plain/ desert and valley land, lots of towns for entertainment.
At Pachuca pick up Mex 88 south through the flatland s with many old ex-haciendas to see., big aqueduct at Tepeyahualco. At Tepeapulco turn off onto Hidalgo state highway 115 east to Tlaxco, very nice farm country, and at Tlaxco turn south onto Mex 119 all the way to PueblA ( with an A!)
Never anywhere near Cd Mex.
Now if your desire to avoid theBIG city is driven by worries about the traffic and getting stuck in traffic at an inconvenient time then adjust your time schedule ... or did yo map out a really tight time schedule with deadlines, reservations and appointments ?( if so, shame on you ) . Take Mex 57 from Queretaro all the way to the north edge of the DF metropolis and after paying the toll at the town of S Pedro Tepotzotlan turn west onto the town main entry street right at the end of the toll plaza . Tepotzotlan has very good inexpensive hotels along the way to the centro , get a room! , and it has a very nice historical downtown where you can spend some part of the day. Then in the morning have a leisurely breakfast as the day's commuter traffic does its thing , then after te rush hour you can take your sweet time to make your way across town, with never a worry about getting stranded after dark . Then find the way out east of town on old Mex 150/190 LIBRE ! and mosey on over to Puebla.
Now you will really be glad if you are free of the noted appointments/reservations to goad you onward and you can spend a night in any hotel you wish.
No security problems along these roads .Any motorcyclist on an adventure tour should not be afraid of any big city riding and Mex DF is as good a learning excercise as any .Just make sure you do it during daylight riding .When you get to know it it turns out to be just a collection of towns grown together, not much differnt than Boswash or the LA basin and any other overpopulated region

Mexico City (D.F.) not that bad, especially if you do it on a weekend. I would go straight to Centro Historico (very nice Hotel catty corner to Cathedral-Holiday Inn Zocalo). If really averse to D.F., there is the newish Arco del Norte that bypasses to East of D.F. but I've never taken it. Arte, the OP of this wonderful thread took it awhile back...D.F. is a fascinating place IMO.

Avoiding Mexico City is like touring Italy and avoiding Rome.

Had a great time exploring The City on the KLR last April. I'll check out your hotel recommendation next trip. Is that Hotel Catedral?

I believe the Holiday Inn Zocalo used to be the Hotel Catedral. Its very nicely located...

Thanks for all the route suggestion. We plan on busting ass from Laredo to Oaxaca the end of January. Once there we will set the agenda for the next couple of weeks.. I've got plans to hit the Big Shitty on the return trip, but a couple of days won't give it justus. *TricePilots Oaxaca report got me to thinking about that part of the world. Nice report.

Take your time once you hit Veracruz, no rush.
Spend two days in the mountains and then head south to Oaxaca via Tlacotalpan or go via Tehuacan.
You'll be glad you did.
