I was in search of a beach that I had first found in 1975 and revisited in 1983. Things have changed so much along the highway that I never found that great beach, but what a nice experience with the wonderful people of Mexico. I spent a night at a wonderful, if a bit down at the heel resort called Costa Alegre. Walked for miles on a beach that was deserted except for one very serious Mexican runner in his sixties! I stopped my walk at a cluster of casitas to check them out, they were clearly the cottages of Mexican families, some of them had seen better days others were quite well cared for. Clearly the economy has hit these folks hard. Way at the back of the property I saw what appeared to be a caretakers home and there were a couple of people sitting there. I walked over and was greeted warmly and offered queso blanco with tortillas and coca... well I had not had breakfast... the cheese was made right there in that house... and Mexican Coca Cola is better than the high fructose corn syrup sweetened crap that we get here... I eagerly tucked into the queso and tortillas and sipped the coke slowly. The occupants of the house were an older couple and their son in his late twenties. We had a great talk about life, the declining economy, and the terrorism of the narcotraficantes... these folk are pissed ladies and gentlemen... they are tired of this shit... they are tired of what is going on in their country and tired of what is being said in our country. These simple peasant folk in a remote part of the Mexican Central Pacific Coast are more aware of the world than the primary voters in Iowa!
I certainly wish there were "like" buttons on ADVrider.

Heading south

Thanks to many of the regulars on this thread and to a few of the not so regulars, I got over the rhetoric of the media and last year spent a month in Mexico on my Harley. Had a terrific time but, just not enough of it. The biggest danger I encountered was passing big trucks on windy roads and eating and drinking too much.

Fast forward to this year and the regulars and not so regualrs generally continue to indicate Mexico remains a great place to explore. This year I solved the time problem so have allocated three months for the trip and now have an 800GS to get over the topes a bit easier.

Will be heading down the Baja then down the coast to the Oaxaca area - Mrs RexBuck will fly down a spend a couple of weeks with me in that area then I'll head back up through the interior. Of course I continue to comb ADV for ideas and while I have only scratched the surface, have to extend a big thanks to the many on who have given me great ideas for places to see, things to do and roads to ride.

I have toyed with doing a blog or ride report and will likely give it a shot. My problem always seems to be that once I get in at the end of the day, I start hitting the cervezas or tequila and my writing skills go from bad to worse. Also, I've always struggled with taking pictures on the road as I usually get into the ride and, having so much fun I just don't get around to stopping for a pic. So, one of the things I want to learn to do on this trip is to relax a bit, take some time for pics and maybe a bit of writing. If I get something going I'll post a link here.

So, heading out in a couple of days and might just run into a couple of you down there.

Buen viaje, and if you come through San Miguel de Allende on a Wednesday, our local riders meet at the Longhorn Smokehouse at 5 PM.

More and more riders setting sights on Oaxaca

Don't forget to explore the valley. There's more to the area than Oaxaca city itself

You and the Mrs. can go to almost any hotel and sign on for tours by collectivo. They're not expensive and they're set up for all the local "must see" places.

Take her to Asador Vasco and get a zocalo-side table on the balcony. A couple of glasses of wine, an order of pollo en mole negro, and you're King for a Day.

Remember those old comic book ads for x-ray specs? As a schoolboy, how I wished that technology was real! Springtime in junior high meant that more than just the flowers were in bloom...
