Hola Sjoerd,

Was also our experience leaving Mexico for Guatemala. Re-entered Mexico this afternoon without any issues. Got new FMMs to go with our existing TVIPs and were on our way.

If you read Spanish, take a look at this article from Revista 400 (a Mexican motorcycle magazine that is becoming quite enjoyable these days).

Esther of Palenque

Found my girl Esther at Palenque

Just as I was parking the bike in the morning, her collectivo stops right next to us and she gets out.

Spent a nice amount of time talking to her and meeting her aunt and cousins.

More nice photos of photogenic Esther for the ride report

Our hotel tonight is 15 minutes from Eyipantla Falls.

Free cerveza for who can guess where we stopped.

We're waiting.

Sounds like you guys are having a great (and safe) trip. I leave March 15...only six weeks away!

Yes, overnight in Veracruz at one of the downtown hotels you recommended, and dinner out if you can. Taking a hired boat out to the island and then out to see Eyipantla Falls, then up the coast.

Trice, the Candelaria Festival in Tlacotalpan starts today, I believe. That is only a short ride and a $20 peso toll off of the Mex #180 south of Alvarado, might be worth a visit for you guys, the food is good there and it is a UNESCO heritage site and should be a Pueblo Magico if it already isn't.
You can spend a couple of hours there and get a good feel for the Papoloapan river basin area.
Jimmex thought you guys might like either the Hotel Emporio (great view of the port) or the Gran Hotel Diligencias which is just across the street from the bars in Los Portales in the Zocalo so you can easily find the hotel even if you are bobbing and weaving a little from the Portales.
Try the Veracruz Te Amo brand of cigars, cheap and plentiful in the Portales area, don't feel timid about haggling on the prices, and someone will try to sell you a Rolex and a MontBlanc pen or two, movies, cd's, peanuts, pistachios, and you will probably notice a lady or two there who gives out free condoms but charges for demonstrations.
No, sorry, I can't give you a ride report on that one.
I might be able to swing by for a drink with you guys in the Portales if I can, if not, maybe a later breakfast or cup of coffee tomorrow AM after 10:30am if you are spending the day here.
Be sure to do the ride from Catemaco to Angel R. Cabada via the Sontecomapan, the biological research station operated by UNAM, Montepio, Roca Partida, and then back out to the Mex #180 at El Tropico just south of Angel R. Cabada, the Tuxtlas might have a lot of truck traffic, the ride via Montepio is much better. The Tuxtlas are only fun for about 15 minutes or so. It adds about a half an hour on the ride but offers much more interesting scenery and better riding. Traffic will be much lighter and you can hit the beach at Montepio or a few places along the way.

The zocalo in Veracruz is a great place to hang out. Try to be there when the military honor guard lowers the flag. Really impressive.
