If you want to be considered as using poor man's transportation you need a beat up scooter or a pizza delivery bike or maybe a Chinese bike with some gee gaws. But you better be wearing sandals and old clothes and probably no helmet. That is what is considered poor man's transportation.

You'll never be considered as using poor man's transportation here if you are riding a bike where one Touratech farkle costs more than what the local people could possibly earn in two week's of hard work.

As for giving beer money to local thugs, once you open your wallet you are screwed unless you really know the lay of the land and what you are doing. The beer money shakedown is a pain in the butt when you are confronted with it, it is extortion plain and simple. It is a hassle when you are traveling alone and I avoid it at all costs. Personally, giving money to some drunk so he can drink more and then go home and beat his wife and kids is not my idea of a positive engagement with local folks. You need to know how these guys live and what they do to other local people, you are not the only one being shaken down. They pull the same stunt with other local people, too. Call me a tightwad if you want, but I will gladly give a little "cooperacion" to a woman with 3 little kids hanging off her skirt that are cold and hungry than some drunk thinking he is a human toll booth.

Think about this. How much "protection" are you going to get for a six pack? LOL!

Kiko is very correct in saying that you should pick your companions carefully when you ride some of these areas. However, if you don't live in the region it can be difficult to choose who you ride with (like on a moto tourist type tour) and you are stuck with the group. Often, I would much rather ride alone than with some local groups. SR makes a good point about mamones and juniors and such, he does more of those "organized' rides so he has had more experience with that. Ask Craneguy about the Harley crews. LOL!

not much from one six pack, BUT if you drink a lot you can make one of these

It would be surprising to see one without an armed escort.

Is this thread safe?

Bamagator we are on page 674 of this thread...it might be a real good idea to read most if not all of those pages before you dip your oars into these deep and sometimes troubled waters...know the neighborhood and proceed with caution and a bit of respect...not the place to rant about your sister or quote the tag line for ED med warnings...your experience is valuable but you are a bit green to have this much attitude and refer to Trice as "dude".

PJ: 674 on my iPad, PowerBook, iPhone, and PC none appear to count pages differently...another cyber highway hazard?

I prefer, "dark and stormy night."

My pet name for Trice is "Colonel Who?".

Hey Bob Loblaw, that is a great video! If I start saving now, instead of fixing your fork seal in the garage we can build one of those "Search for the "Holy Grail" type suits. The we'll get inside the rabbit and push it up to the door where the Texans are staying. LOL!
And we'll call them "dude" just to piss them off. We'll be outnumbered but we can probably drag the Crane Guy and Antonio from the Rivoli bar to our side.

WOW! This is just stupid!

Of course I have not read all 674 pages either, so my opinion probably don't count!

OK! We need to do a survey! Who has "read most if not all of those" 674 pages?

Have not "read most if not all of those" 674 pages: 1 That would be me! Heck, I don't read all of what I write, I sure ain't reading all that y'all write!

Have "read most if not all of those" 674 pages: ? I am sure this is probably everyone but me and the numb that has been traveling down there for years.

Well, I'm pretty sure if I read all 674 pages of this thread, I could find which bridge in Laredo/Nuevo Laredo is the least crowded to cross into Mexico, but I'm in Laredo now, and crossing manana, and just don't have the time to research it, so flame me at will ya bastids. Meanwhile, anyone who will just answer the question, TIA. Normally I would have crossed at Columbia, but timing and circumstance has brought me to beautiful Laredo, TX.
