Talking

Not wanting to jinx myself with my previous comment (!) I feel the need to add... Provided you keep your wits about you, don't do anything stupid, don't ride at night and trust your instincts..

Ok. That covers it.

Why not post a pic or two of your bike?

So far... Everyone has been so friendly and can't do enough to help us. We attempted some dirt tracks, but riding two up on a heavily laden road bike with road tires probably wasn't the best idea... Inevitably we got a puncture, it wasn't long before all sorts of people were offering to help.*

One particular truck full of mean looking futher muckers pulled up and I thought this is it... Game over... I had the tire lever in my hand ready just in case... After a brief conversation in my shaky Spanish, they all started laughing, reached into the back of their truck and pulled out two ice cold cans of Modelo beer for us!*

The next day, our battery had died... My fault for not checking the fluids. Anyway, some police pulled over to help us..they didn't have any jump leads on them so drove off to find some and came back minutes later to help get us started. When I tried giving them some pesos in return they just patted me on the back and said "no Gracias amigo".. So much for them all being on the take.

We cross over to Mazatlan tomorrow so it could all change, but for now, my response to the question: is Mexico safe? Is an unresounding *yes.
México is like a fine woman. Many gaze upon her beauty but few will know her. Good on ya, Amigo.

Bienveidos! Mexicans are the most giving people I have ever met. Just stay away from the bars in Mazatlan that have black Escalades with custom wheels and blacked out windows. Same advice as PHX or LA!

Suerte Byron!

Bato, some BMW guys made it to down to the Baluarte bridge this weekend and took some nice photos. The tallest bridge in the world! 400+ meters, located at the border of Durango and Sinaloa.

They say the highway will be done by November. Looks like they have their work cut out for them.

Hey thanks for that.

Am using a cr@ppy iPad that won't let me upload pictures... My Gf has a laptop but she is using that at the moment. Wil try getting on later to upload some pics.

In the meantime, there are a load of pictures on our blog if you are interested..

Byron, if you come up the Durango-Mazatlan Highway, I recommend stopping in at the nice little silver mining town of Copala, to see the church and have a meal at Daniel's. Copala is about 30 minutes up from where the mountains start.

You can see the Baluarte bridge at a distance from the old highway. Direct access to the bridge from the Sinaloa side is at the town of El Palmito (UTM 414840, 2606134). The bridge is about 10Km southeast of there and you will likely have to talk the security gate into letting you in. If you go for it, try telling them you are going to Pino Gordo, which is a little town by there. That might help?

It is easy to sneak in from the Durango side (UTM 450402, 26623665) but it's a long backtrack and you have to go through a construction zone, which I think is fun and interesting if you are prepared for some highly variable road conditions. (I guess if those big GSs made it, than anyone can ) You can see the road in the bottom picture.

Suerte
SR

Ps: If you stay in DGO and want to meet up give me a shout.

Byron, if you are coming over to the Gulf coast, I am always around the Veracruz area.
Let me know if you are planning on coming over. I'll be happy to show you some decent roads or meet up if you
are on the way and near the Puebla Veracruz or Oxaca Veracruz border.
Check out Garry Dymond over on the Horizons forum, he knows Mexico City, lives there, rides there, and is a very kind person.
