Have lost more friends to GA than motorcycling but I see no practical application to how anyone chooses to live their life.

Shizzman,

This is a pretty representative sample of what the road is like currently, top to bottom

Thanks for posting up the vid, DC. Looks pretty much the same as March 2010.

Your cam mount was great for showing the road conditions, BTW.

Celebrity Air

Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper on the same plane, Rick Nelson, Myrna Loy, Patsy Cline, John Denver the others mentioned and more... it seems like it is frequently rushed... gotta get there... and booked last minute. I lost 32 colleagues in a charter plane crash near Bishop, CA in 1974, not celebrities but the company chartered the plane to save some overtime $$. A couple if years later I heard a couple of chicks in a bar at Marina Del Rey talking about a plane crash, my ears perked up, it was the accident my friends were in... one gal was telling the other that the pilot was having marital and financial difficulties... who knows but it is damn hard to overload a Convair 880 to the point that it can't clear known terrain. Of course plenty of people auger in who are not celebs... you just don't hear about them because... they're not celebs, just unfortunate victims.

Given that flying can be risky, makes me wonder why I went to Arizona in 2004 to add a glider rating to my license.

Really? Flying with no engine?

Oh that's right I remember now.

Flying is nothing more than throwing yourself at the ground and missing.

I love flying.I hope I can get my credentials reinstated, and updated, in the next couple years so I can go back to flying.

I can't think of a single regular or frequent poster here that wouldn't make a good pilot.

It isn't physical skills, or really, intellect. I'm proof of that. We all seem to be adrenaline junkies in one form or fashion.

Like motorcycling to Mexico, it's all about controlling risk. And yes, sometimes no matter what you put into the equation, there are factors beyond your control.

But I'll take that over a coronary on a couch any day.

...............

In my Air Force days I had two badges on the patch on my flight suit: pilot wings and parachute wings.

The pilot wings meant I could fly an airplane

The parachute wings meant I wasn't very good at it

I probably wouldn't. I am horribly afraid of heights.

With that said I love aircraft and hit the museums whenever possible. Which reminds me - has anyone ever noticed the Mexicana 727 that is in a park on the south of Monterrey not too amazingly far from where this poor gal's Lear went down? One has to wonder how they dragged this thing through the streets because it sure didn't land in the driveway.

This is a common misconception.

I know a lot of pilots who are afraid of heights

I have heard that, but on a bad day I cannot climb the ladder to get into the plane.

That is a delicate subject that we shall not get into here

I start getting tunnel vision and vertigo above 30 feet.Flying an airplane doesn't bother me.I think it's the false sense of security provided by being inside the fuselage.
