It appears that Garmin has re-thought their approach on the value of Map products and are now looking to hold on to Cartography a bit more tightly.
At the other end of the spectrum is Nokia (NAVTEQ). Nokia has made all of the NAVTEQ maps free for their compatible handset customers. Now there is a value statement for you.

Slightly off topic, but of interest and maybe a solution for a few of the problems the latest MapSource has created. MapSource Reverse Converter I just used it on a CNNTNA 2010.4 map and it worked as advertised. I'm now using the new maps in 6.13.7.
There's also a link to a 6.13.7 source.

Should I update to 6.15.7?
I'm currently running Mapsource 6.15.6. Should I bother updating to 6.15.7? I don't want to inadvertently screw up my maps.

MapSource v6.15.7 should not cause you any problems.
