Zumo 450 waypoint navigation - no routing

I have a Zumo 450 and I want to set it up so that it will follow a route of way points with a direct line between each waypaoint. As it stands now the unit does everything it can to route me onto roads. I remember reading up on this a couple of years ago and supposedly there was no way around it...even after putting the unit into "offroad" mode. However I was at the Paris to Dacre ride in Canada in 2012 and people were successfully using the same unit for this type of navigation. Can anyone provide some insight on what I have to do?

thanks. Searches on google and advrider have been unsuccessful
