fantastic information!! been looking to get back out that way on a DS ride this time. Did anyone ever post a passes = ratings scenario though? I saw discussions but no final breakdown. planning on flying out and renting. Is Davis Service Center in Montrose (KLRs) the best way to go? And ideally it'd be great if someone could recommend a 4-5 day intermediate route. In the meantime I'll keep digging around on here.

thanks again for all the great info, pics and photos! hey geek, can u find me a job out there somewhere??

Hopefully I'm not treading on Geek's thread but I did get the ideas for ratings from here

I will humbly recommend our ride report from last year as a description of many passes in the San Juan Mountain area. (GPS tracks available too)

I just got back from another trip into the same area, solo, and have explored more passes. I will be posting my impressions and ratings of these passes as I get all my data uploaded!

House of Motorrad ( http://www.houseofmotorrad.com/ ) in Boulder is who we plan to rent from next, 1200GS's, 2010 KTM 990 Adventure R,
F-800GS's, etc. They are located in Boulder.

Two years ago we picked up rentals in Denver and spent the night in Leadville the night of arrival, on to Ouray to see the passes and trails for 3 days and then one day back to Denver. Every inch of the ride was great sodon't worry about the drive. You will also be only about 3 hrs away from Moab, via Last Dollar Rd and Telluride) if you want a quick run to the beautiful desert. This is like having two vacations in one trip, mtns and desert.

The people at Davis Service Center are also goood people to deal with.

Middle of august the wife and I will start a trip after she finishes up the Leadville 100...

We'll be 2-up on a GS with camping gear, any tracks you all recommend to hit or more specifically avoid? The plan is to head north-west-ish.

Thanks for the great info and photos - I'm subscribed. I'm also an avid hiker and backpacker and enjoy looking at this information from a non-motorized viewpoint as well! I'm riding one of my DRs down to the Lower 48 next summer to store somewhere so I can enjoy riding on some of the incredible dirt roads in the Rockies, especially my home state of WY.

Happy trails!

Nothing to see here in Colorado, pass right through. Maybe look into the great state of Illinois for adventure riding?

Here's another good one and my favorite Colorado specific one - I love this song, and definitely listen to the words...

Bill Fries (aka C.W. McCall) was the mayor of Ouray in the 70s and 80s I believe. We has a marketing man from Iowa who wrote the "Old Home Keep on Truckin' Cafe" theme song for an ad for the Old Home Keep on Truckin' Cafe and it caught on and became a big hit. He then basically invented this personality for himself (which I think is completely awesome) and wrote about 5 or 6 really awesome songs.

If you have a chance check them out on Youtube:

Crispy Critters (completely funny, also a it's just a joke)
Old Home Keep on Truckin' Cafe
Classified (also -- completely awesome for anyone into cars). "Dog's name was Frank"
Black Bear Road
Wolf Creek Pass

are my favorites... :)

then there are more like CJ5, and Convoy.

A lot of people say his music was behind the "truckin' " pop culture movement of the 70's with his hit Convoy. Which led to things like Smokey and the Bandit, etc, for better or worse...
