Just spent some quality time, about 10 hours all up, in the garage getting my '80 XS11 running.
I bought a battery around 2 weeks ago and did the usual -"well, it was running last time" - fresh petrol and hit the starter. Sort of wanted to run but no.
Off with the carbs. so THAT'S what the turps smell is! A bad cas of Carbie Horrobullis Cloggii
Thought a quick scrub out with a bit of carby cleaner might do the trick.
Two cylinders. hmmm. check the coils. One cylinder for each coil is running, and one not. Just confirm spark. Yep. Carbs off again.

Bought some better quality carb cleaner (Nulon) - this stuff works fantastic!
Especially on your skin and lungs.
Full strip down, separate the carbs, impact driver on some screws that just wont budge - that's an interesting feeling - whacking the shit out of your carbs with a hammer. How hard can you hit before the carb body breaks!
well, as hard as I hit it anyway 'cause I eventually got them all to pieces.

Halfway through and I disover a very small spring on the bench. Where did that come from. back to the manual. So I've got the two springs but not the two locator balls for the choke mechanism. Deal with that later.

Re-position the needle clip and wonder why the main jet is 125.5, when the book reckons 135.5, or something similar.

All cleaned up. Determined that one carb had the idle fuel circuit blocked and the other had the pilot jet blocked.

Cannibalized a spare set of carbs from a wreck I picked up a few years back. Two 1mm steel balls and one pilot jet. And even a couple of phillips head screws to replace the one's that I chewed out with some multi-grips (they weren't gonna budge otherwise)

Set the float heights. Easy peezey!

Wack em back in. Bit of spray lube helps to get the inlet tubes in the right spot, screw, screw, screw, screw.

Fill the carbs and away she goes. 4 cylinders, sweet as. They'll need a balance and I may even give that a go myself.

Bleed the rear brake - piston kit installed last week & that came up reasonable almost straight away. Amazing.

It's all coming together. Add a Tkat fork brace shortly. Then get the paint restored.

The only photo of it that I can find.

Good to see Greyghost still riding those great XS650's. His might not be stock, but they are a great classic bike with a bullet-proof engine. Keep those XS's alive Greyghost. If anyone else has an interest in the Yamaha XS650, there is plenty of good stuff on the XS650 Club of Australia web site (few offroad bikes too)

Just going back OTR next week. Hope to track down a few other XS11 owners thru the xs1100.com.au website. I'd love to see a line of XS11's in the one spot. I've never seen another one when I've been out and about on mine.
