Sounds like dealing with goobers on craigslist

Them: You have this listed for $X. Whats your absolute lowest price?
Me: Apparently you are unfamiliar with the fine and storied art of haggling...
Them: What do you mean?

or

Them: You have this list for $X, will you take $Y (where $Y << $X)?
Me: For that price, I will let you come over and see it and burn it in front of you.

What do car salesmen and moto salesmen really do????

Are they really worthless and useless as they seem to me? Wish they would go away.....

They make the buying experience unpleasant.

Every time I've sat beside a salesman doing the paperwork it's certainly seemed like a week.

Fax the info in advance and the worst case scenario would be signing 8 forms.

8 signatures ... what is that ... 120 seconds?

Craigslist goobers are the worst. When I've sold something on CL, I've always put something to this extent in the ad:

THIS IS THE FINAL PRICE. THERE IS NO NEGOTIATION. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR BARTER, YOUR SERVICES, OR YOUR TRADES. I WILL NOT TAKE A CHECK, A MONEY ORDER, OR ANYTHING EXCEPT CASH IN HAND AT THE TIME OF THE TRANSACTION. I WILL NOT DELIVER.

Works great.

As for car dealers, I've had good and bad experiences. Buying our Subaru was the worst. I felt like I was assraped when we left. Buying our Honda was the best. Nice and easy, but probably because Honda was not dealing on Fits at all at the time because all were sold before they even made it to the dealer, so there was no dicking around.

What a deal!

So I'm out looking at pickups at our local Chevy dealer and came across this:

Yes.. $999 dealer charge to fill the tires with nitrogen. On the plus side it does come with free refills for life.

I wonder if I offer full MSRP for the truck they'll waive the $999 nitrogen fee?

As someone who has been selling cars for the last three years, it is nice to see some understanding of the business. I'm really encouraged by the tone of most of the posts. The OP got all the consideration he deserved. If there is a qualified buyer IN FRONT OF ME, I will do everything I can to get the vehicle out the door. Discounting used cars over the phone is a bad move. They are not as much a commodity as a new one. If you haven't seen the vehicle in person and taken a drive, how can you start dealing over it?

I don't recall the exact model of beemer he was looking to buy, but that is one brand I would only really want to lease. One can get buried deep in these expensive cars, and the upkeep can be a bear. Great car if you are looking for a real 4 door sports car though.

As far as $45k half-ton pups go, our Tundra Limited Crewmax is a beauty.

Ahhh... a fellow Toyota guy. I used to be very active at Edmunds Town Hall and Tundrasolutions but haven't played on either for years. The same kind of bullshit crying about salesmen that started this thread. People complain about bad treatment, yet keep patronizing bad dealers. They then project that bad experience to all people who have chosen this profession and thinks its OK to call you and me liars, cheats and thiefs. It pisses me off but I've learned to live with it. I've been at this for more than 16 years so I've heard it all and this guy is no different.

The atmosphere contains 78% nitrogen.
They want to charge $999.
What a great deal.

competitive dealers will give you a price on the phone, AND in writing. and no, we didn't end up buying from the cheapest dealer (we went with the one we liked the most, and they happened to be the second cheapest).

but to the og poster, sounds like you didn't get great customer service. but that hardly makes them the lowest form of life (i mean, many of them are, but your story doesn't support your assertion). and seriously, they came down from the list price- what more do you want from a first volley in negotiations?
