Salt Lick BBQ, Round Rock location
Dahveed, my wife, daughter and I ate at Salt Lick in Round Rock. It was pretty good, not sure how it will compare to the original.
RIBS: Pretty good,seasoning..... a solid 7 BRISKET: Again pretty damn good....7 SAUSAGE: Sausage is OK.... 5.5 They have 2 different BBQ sauces both of which are good and would be great to enhance lesser quality Q. The meat was good and did not really need it

Salt Lick BBQ, Driftwood, TX
Ok after all the hoopla about this, I figured I had to make a pilgrimage to it. So I flew the RT down and got there about 1:30...DAMN...1 hour wait
and I did not have beer Look like everyone else did though...With a little luck, I was able to get a table in about 20 minutes cause I was by myself. Fairly typical rustic decorum for a BBQ joint Dahveed and I had ate the Salt Lick in Round Rock 2 weeks ago so I had an Idea of what I was in for.HERE WE GO! RIBS: These were good, better than Round Rock location....8 BRISKET: NOT GOOD, It was tough and NO flavor! WTF...like somebody forgot to even season the meat!..................3 SAUSAGE: Bout the same RR location..still good....5.5 Not sure what happened on the brisket, but it was bad! The ribs are good but just don't stack up to Loco Coyote. I would eat here again but would proabably just do the ribs. The sides were on the lacking side too! Beans were hard so needed to be cooked some more. Another plus is it is pretty country and makes for a nice ride. I rode back past the Hamilton Pool on the Perdenales...really nice

Great thread. I can't believe I missed this thread for the last six months.
![]() I've made two rides down to Texas from Michigan the last few years just to sample BBQ and check out the spring flowers....and visit inlaws. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I have yet to come across bad Q. I like it all! One my favorites is Rudys in Leon Springs mainly because its close to the relatives and because its on the way to the Hills. On my way down to Rockport I pass through Sinton and there is a Rudys there (no relation to the chain Rudys) that has great sausage and award winning brisket. Rudy himself was on Regis and Kelly to receive the award last winter. I've stopped at a couple of places in Glen Rose that were very good and I like Reilys in Blanco too. I'll have to hit Hard 8 the next time I pass by and must vistit Lockhart when I get over that way. I wasn't impressed with Coopers but am willing to give it a second chance, or third. Coopers gets bonus points because just down the street is a nice park on the river just in case you get your Q 2 go.

You must have hit Salt Lick on a BAD day, as I have eaten there for over 30 years and I always find it to be great. Yes the beans are a bit weak but I do not go for the sides. Though they should also be very good to rate highly.
Maybe Austin is trying to please the HUge influx of Californiacaters by adding Tofu to the meat... haha. I cannot wait to go by Loco Coyote when I return home to the motherland of Texas soon. I could even have my buddy Tom, owner of LC, cater some cue for us for the Texas Roll the BOnes rally. Just an idea. I would have to pick it up though. |

The SL has made it to the TV food programs. Usually the kiss of death due to too many people/rushing the food. Hope not. Last time I was there it was excellent, we ALWAYS go on weekdays to avoid the crowds. And the occasional poor reports on Coopers are justified. Been overhyped for years. The several BBQ joints in Lockhart are usually excellent. Each has their own character. And finally to Texas Rockman, THANKS to you for your work to provide an Offroad riding opportunity in East Texas. Very, very much appreciated.
