I was under the impression that because the bike was registered to me as a legal on-road bike in another state and I moved here, that CA had to allow you to register it as such. Otherwise it seems that they would require all 49 state vehicles to install the emissions equipment required for CA vehicles. I haven't heard of anyone required to do that, especially in a case where you moved residence and brought the vehicle with you. I could see a problem with a bike purchased as an off-road bike and registered as such in CA, then changed to a street use, however. Regardless, seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot spending time to remove fee paying units?
I don't want to sell a bike to anyone, only to have them have a problem with registering the bike . . . and especially not in this asylum.

Again, for what its worth, I investigated the plate situation a lot before buying this bike. There's plenty of BS floating around the net but reality that seemed to distill out is :

1) If a bike is red sticker then DMV can pull the plate if they notice it.
2) If a bike was plated after DMV made it official policy not to plate converted off road bikes in 2004 then the plate will be pulled if they notice it.

Assuming this is correct, the only CRF450 that's completely safe is the green stickered 2002. Hopefully folks with plates can fly under DMV's radar and get years of good riding in. I just didn't want to take that chance since its a bunch of work to do the CR500 conversion. My real goal is to have a plated CR500AF.

just installed the new tank. i love it. don't notice any increased girth, but i didn't have to fuel up on a 7 hour ride!

it's a sad state of affairs, i know, but i don't do most of the maintenance on my bike, so i have no answer for you. one day i'll learn the simple stuff, but i'm just too damned busy right now.

.71 US qt or .74 US qt w/filter change.

But mostly I use the dipstick.

On early (05-06) CRF450Xs the transmission calls for .69 US qt but many's experience has shown that a full qt staves off 2nd gear troubles.

I just bought my '09 X, pretty sweet.

I just went to check the fluids, and I see that the coolant tank is gone.

What's the logic there, weight reduction? I think I'd rather have a tank.

What do you guys think?

To check the level, should I just check it cold at the cap? Seems like it would expand at warm up and spill out if I fill it.

No tank is fine, as long as you don't overheat.

The pressure cap keeps the coolant in the radiator until it reaches 185-190f, then the cap opens and coolant goes to the tank (or on your leg if no tank). The real problem with no tank is that as the bike cools, the coolant is supposed to flow back into the radiator, keeping it full. It would only take a few boils to be running seriously low.

It's easy to add a catch bottle, and it doesn't need to be stock.
