My CRF leaked out all its tranny fluid.
I had a look, and it seems that it's the output shaft seal behind the front sprocket. Motor oil level is fine. So did some research and it seems that you can pull the seal and replace without splitting the cases, but it looks like a fiddly job. While I have the thing down, I would also like to address the Clutch grab issue. What happens is you get no fine "clutch release". As you let out the clutch its like this ...nothing...nothing...nothing: FULLRELEASE which is not a porn-tastic as it sounds. Clutch does not slip, it just is like an ON/OFF switch What do you guys think the issue might be there? What to look for? --Nick |

The oil did not really come out until after it was parked. Of course it's impossible to really know because they did not see fit to put a freaking dipstick on the transmission oil. Gotta keep the weight down, huh? I was running a full quart of oil in the trans, FWIW. The bike is a 2005. I have no idea how many hours are on the bike or clutch. I see parts and pieces in my future! thanks! --Nick |

When you buy your seal and clutch parts pick up an hour meter. They don't cost much and make it easyer to keep track of the maint. I bought one when I bought my CRF/X and base all of my work off of that and my service notes. BTW, hot spots on the metal plates will make a clutch "grabby".

So the proper method is: Bike on stand such that the rear wheel is in the air, and suspension is fully extended. At the end of the chain slider (top) push down on the chain and measure from top of chain to bottom of swing arm. Push up on chain and measure to stop of swing arm. Difference should be 25-30mm (~1 inch). Sound about right? --Nick |
