Actually, they missed it. It is my understanding that the Abigail showed up just after the unpleasant event.
In the 1990's I worked as an archaeologist at Monticello and some weekend projects at Jamestown and a few other James River sites. I worked with Dr. Bill Kelso who is still uncovering the original James Fort site. I read Kelso's report on the Carter's Grove (Martin's Hundred) site which is his doctoral thesis. When I found the Monticello Field School where he was the director I applied right away. I was accepted and worked there in 1990, '92, and 95. Sorry to bore you with my VA connection, but hey, you asked.
