Another beutiful day for a ride!

Here's the church itself followed by a monument on the church grounds dedicated to the Little Fork Rangers.

Intersection of 229 and 211

Rt211E ~7 miles west of Warrenton

Rt211E ~ 5 miles west of Warrenton
At this point, my camera decided to die.

ChrisG19 screwed with this post 06-08-2010 at 12:31 PM Reason: Added a some photos of the Little Fork Church

Z19 (Amherst/Rockbridge) and Z119 (Frank Padget)

Both signs are located on US501 about 2.5 miles east of the junction with VA130. This section of road is a wonderful ride, I've passed by these signs many times on the way to Lynchburg and Advridgerunner's campouts. It's also popular with the sport bikers.

First up is Z19, the Amherst/Rockbridge County border.

Formed in 1778 from Augusta and Botetourt, and named for the Natural Bridge. Samuel Houston and Cyrus H. McCormick were born in this county. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are buried in Lexington. Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military institute are there.

Samuel Houston was a busy guy in his time. When I rode from West Virginia to Texas (namely Houston) last year, I found signs scattered about with his name all the way there. One of the more interesting things I found was The Rock House in Tennessee.

But I digress. Side B of Z19.

Formed in 1761 from Albemarle, and named for Jeffery, Lord Amherst, British Commander in the French and Indian War. Balcony Falls are in this county.

Last but not least, Z119, The Courage of Frank Padget.

Heavy rains early in 1854 left the James River and the treacherous Balcony Falls, south of this site, in full flood. On 21 January the towrope of the canal boat, Clinton, snapped. Washed over the Mountain Dam and through successive falls, its passengers became stranded in the raging waters. Braving the dangerous river, Frank Padget, an enslaved boatman, skillfully led a crew of five dozen rescuers who successfully saved dozens of the stranded passengers. While he was attempting to rescue the last passenger, Padget's craft was broken on the rocks. Unable to fight the rushing current, Padget drowned.

Ever wonder what's on the back side of that second sign? Me too.

Hmm.
