I'm curious as to why everyone seems to think this can't happen. The biggest issue I see is preparing a facility on such a short timeline, but the money is there. Bernie Ecclestone didn't get to be weathiest man in the UK (self-made at that) because he's a fool.

History has taught us to only believe an F1 race is coming to a new location when the cars are actually ON the track. Case in point, the British GP was meant to be going to Donnington for the next 10 years and look what happened to that.

I still laugh when I see this thread... I lived in Austin while attending UT many years ago and I can barely remember when a sport outside of football was mentioned; NCAA Runnin' Horns possibly. I would have never thought F1 would goto Texas, let alone Austin.

I am really interested to see how this works...

There is already a track just north of Austin Airport. I wonder if that will be expanded upon to build this new facility.

I think Austin isnt a good location for a major race. Too far from anything in my humble darn opinion.

This is my primary reason for disbelief. US GP in Indy drew a large contingent of visitors from outside our country - I recall being on a flight from DFW to ORD to see the first one with some Brits who were bitching about having to fly to Chicago and drive to Indy....of course my reply was, "why did you fly to DFW first, mate?"

But, my point is: Austin, while neat and all....is just not a good location for all this.

because it will probably cost $300~400 million for a purpose-built facility, and bernie's sanctioning fees average about $30 million a year.

they will need a major corporate sponsor or two, (potentially) money from the city or state, reasonably high ticket prices, and sustained attendance to pay for this.

once bernie feels slighted and pulls out, austin will be left holding a very expensive bag.
