i wrap the headers of the old bikes i pick up that are rusty. i just prefer its look to rust. when i tried to remove the factory heatshield the bolts snapped off so i just left it off and wrapped the whole thing. it does insulate the pipe and act as a heatshield also. its just a last ditch effort before a new pipe is bought. i noticed factory header still available for around $150. maybe one day. it just developed a base gasket leak i need to worry about next...

have never went any further than the header myself. i dont think it would make enough difference to be worthwhile on the muffler, but i do not know. ceramic coating may be better for that?

new old stuff
found an uncut oem muffler to get it back to stock noise levels. of course it doesnt sound as good as with the open pipe but i find i prefer it quiet. fits better too than my rigged up muffler. found some fork reflectors that were missing just because. changed her oil and filter today and adjusted the balancer chain while it was drained. it appeared to never have been done by the amount of slack in it. also repurposed my oem honda cb-1 mirrors on this bike. much better quality than the cheapo chinese ones i had bought for it. even got some cheapy ebay double row footpegs for it. getting better still.

more power!
rejetted the carb saturday. even with the stock muffler it really pepped it up. ended up raising the needle one position and a larger main. im still fiddling with idle settings. problem that arises now is my clutch is slipping. if i adjust the other way it drags too much. im looking at a barnett kit now. just havent pulled the trigger yet.

lonely sp600
well ill just keep posting to myself. itll be my online log of what and when i did stuff to the bike. last weekend i replaced the clutch with a barnett kit. no probs til i snapped off the last bolt to tighten on the cover. grrrr, ive got a new bolt ordered and after fixing that i should be in good shape i think. everything dry except the base gasket weep. thats for winter.

thanks man. i took the cam cover off and helicoiled a stripped bolt hole that was causing a leak. also replaced the seal for the auto decomp as it was wet too. sealed it back up with some toyota cam cover sealant. checked and adjusted valves on the way out. two were tight but not by much. once i get the clutch cover bolt worked out itll be pretty well dried up

ok, now its ready
extracted the broken bolt and sealed the sidecover back up. all good now. got the idle under some control now. no more weird hiccups. now ive got a new starting routine to learn though, hehe. i think its gonna be best to not even use the choke now. need more time with it and its new jetting, but its running strong. woohoo!

pics!
ah yes, thanks for that tdr. should be able to figure something out there. now today a friend and i rode down to wayne nat'l forest. i jumped in the woods and he went off to explore backroads on his honda hawk gt.
i havent been off road on two wheels since in my teens and i must say it was quite challenging. first off, the bike is geared way too tall. even in first there was way too much clutch work required. my arms were pumped in minimal time as it was greasy out there. i shouldve started at a higher, drier point but oh well. did about 170 miles total and never filled up or hit reserve. started with a full tank. overall a great though humbling day on the way: ![]() this way to mud and rock strewn water crossing: ![]() cliff face: ![]() thump deville: ![]() mug with new econo vega flip up:
