Still the proud owner of my original 1985 SP600F

Ride her to work every week....still going strong. In her early life she did 5000 miles of hard desert and baja riding..not much street, like now.
She has put up and torn down countless Desert MC Hare and Hound national courses in Lucerne Valley. Been to San Felipe, Mikes Sky Rancho etc. etc. Still a great bike (though I need a 2nd set of wheels so I can have street tires on one and knobbies on the other)....

I was sent to this thread by a DR650 buddy when he saw me post that I had owned an SP600. I never knew about this thread previously.

I bought mine in 1991 for $800 with very low miles. Under 2K but I don't remember the real #.

I really liked the bike. The suspension worked pretty well for a true D/S bike. I think it's weight was a benefit when it came to keeping it going straight in the rocks. I rode several organized rides with it in NewEngland rocks and roots.

Mine would "flame out" when I gave it the gas too fast coming off idle. I had no knowledge of 4stroke tuning. I only had 2 strokes previously (starting in 1970) and didn't know enough to richen the idle circuit.

Starting it was a nightmare though. Kicking that beast took alot outta me every time I went riding.

I rode it completly stock for a couple seasons. Sold it for about what I paid for it and gave up on big singles till Dec 2005 when I bought my DR650 and started reading ADVrider and made quite a serious dualsport outta it. Now I do the AMA/KTM Nat'l 2 day Dualsports with my DR. It came from the SP600 roots/DNA. Very rare motorcycles, but not real collectable. IMO
I wouldn't mind having mine back or another one in decent shape. Had alot of fun on that bike and continue to do so on my DR650

In late 1992 I bought a DR600 with the idea of fitting SM wheels. I ended up fitting the forks from a Suzuki GSX1100EFE, FZR600 front wheel, EXUP/YZF750 disc mated to a GSX-R1100K front caliper and 1/2" bore master cylinder from a Honfa Revere after experimenting with a 5/8" item off an EXUP. The rear wheel assembly was replaced with one from an RGV250M which also involved converting the bike from drum to disc brake at the rear (never really worked well).

The shorter forks, smaller wheel and lower profile tyre reduced the front end by about 8" or so, it made the steering slightly heavy but incredibly quick. It would no longer wheelie without serious clutch abuse.

Had a few issues with the motor, the splines on countershaft that carried the front sprocket wore away, necessitating a full engine strip. Three months later, the kickstart shaft snapped, requiring another full strip...

I bought the bike with about 15,000 miles on the clock, at about 36,000 miles the conrod snapped around the big end. The conrod then hooked up on the front balance shaft which subsequently pushed it through the front of the engine. A replacement engine was the cheapest way to get the bike back on the road, one was found with almost identical mileage. I later swapped the stock oil cooler for an Earls type cooler fastened to a bracket welded to the frame downtube with custom oil lines but I can't remember the reason behind this mod?

I eventually sold the bike in 2002/3 with about 65,000 miles on the clock. It was a workhorse/commuter/winterhack all rolled in to one. The fuel tank acted as the forkstops and was dented/rusted from a few "spills" but it served me well.

With mine, hard starting meant that the auto-decomp needed adjusting, did mine every time I checked/adjusted the valves.
