me adjusting the valves on the sp
i can do a thumper in about 45 mins from the time it is put on the lift. We spent about six months up there working on a barge and riding everywhere we could. You could take off and ride three or four hundred miles on snowmobile trails with out hitting roads.

i like trouble if its with a thumper
Hey, i had the same problem as you. all of my buddies thought dual sports were lame. i could not convince them that being able to go wherever you wanted on or off road at any time was the most awesome thing in the world. I converted a few , but most saw nothing exciting about a bike that wasn't a crosser and wasn't a street bike. I guess you had to be a bit unhinged!!! I think growing up in the seventies in a small town in Indiana probably helped. i could ride my 250 elsinore to school and my back yard was about 30 acres of jumps, creeeks and puddles, Farm boy heaven!!!!
I think the best thing about that time was the lack of gps, travel guides and even maps in some places. There was no one to ask about it as there was no internet. We would just ask the kid at the gas station or at the bar where to find cool places to see and ride. I still love riding, but there was something special about the time. |

Dualsporting
I guess we got into it honestly. We all rode dirt bikes and had a good area to ride in the coal fields. When they started thining the riding out we migrated to dual sports. There were 3 of us that were pretty serious and a few others that rode on some of our trips.

Another Story
Well we were in the middle of nowhere Wva and needed gas. We stopped at a small store with 2 pumps and one of them was blocked. Being the smart ass I am while the others were waiting paitiently for there turn I rode up a hill and down about 30 stairs to gain access to the blocked pump. The old guy selling gas thought it was the craziest thing he had ever seen. The guys and myself didnt think too much of it but the old guy really got a kick out of it. He said in a joke you can only leave the way you came, up the stairs.
So I rode up the stairs turned on the road and wheelied out of sight. The guys said he walked right out in the middle of the road and had a car blocked behind him watching me ride off.![]() About 3 years later we stopped at the same station and here came the old guy. He started telling us about the crazy guy that rode up and down the stairs and rode off on the hind wheel out of sight. One of my buddys told him he didnt believe someone could do such a thing and he got real serious and went to trimming my buddy up about him not being a liar. Well when we got through gassing up I rode up the stairs and hit the blacktop in a wheelie again. They said he walked right back out into the middle of the road and looked back at them and said that right there was the bastard that did it.

look for 90-91 dr650 parts
i beleive all the plastic and tank are the same i have been thinking of painting my dr650 plastic and tank to match an sp600 i wonder if the sp/dr600 head flows better than a dr650 head? the 600 head has dual exhuast ports and the 650 has a single port i think the cam is the same as well as the head gasket
