Hmmm. This has actually turned into a serious question for me now. Since I need to sell my Goldwing, I decided to get something made within the last 7 years.

Drawn further down from that, I've shown a distinct preference for Harley, especially since I have school and future job based reasons to buy one. I also need something capable of my high speed commute, so the Royal Einfield and Ural Solo ST are eliminated right off the bat.

So all things considered, my somewhat short list of HDs I'm looking at is:

1. The Heritage Softail Classic.

There is a lot of sentimental value to this one, since my uncle (who isn't doing so well now) had one, and it was the first bike I ever rode (passenger). It also has the benefit of a big comfy seat, and bags.

2. The Road King.

The obvious choice. Locking storage, better turning (not that Florida has turns or anything), and that police air seat. There are a million of them down here, slightly used, so deals are abound.

3. The Fat Bob

Better brakes, easier to get then the Switchback. Dunno much about the style, those dual headlights don't quite agree with me, but it's dark at night down here. I would need to either get a sissy bar, or saddlebags extra.

4. The Sportster "72"

Short range ( I could go to school and back, but I would have to fill up every day, no choice), no storage (so saddlebags, or a sissy bar), Five speed Evo. I can't put my finger on why, but I've loved this bike since it was first shown, and it's only gotten worse since I got the chance to sit on it.

But, I'm really aching for that Twin Cam 103. I know I won't be fiddling with it for a while.

If you ride two up on any regular basis, especially with one particularly important person, have her or him check the rear seat. My wife found that the hard bags hit her mid calf, and hard bags are a must for me. While this would not be a big deal around town, it would definitely be an issue after 300 miles. This was pretty much a deal killer on the bike for me.

I should have specified that, I don't ride two up.

If for the same price (assuming what I'm willing to pay will give me a choice), an H-D, Goldwing, or Victory Vision are the real options, the Victory would be my first choice but the wife is not as thrilled, the Goldwing next which the wife liked the feel of, and the H-D which didn't fit the wife as well. Off the shelf, the Goldwing fits the bill without modification.

For that kind of money, I should be happy without making adjustments. Now adding farkles is a whole different matter, but the base machine should be satisfactory from the get go. Granted passenger foot boards are not a big deal and may be a good solution. Then it would come down to price and options as delivered.
