I rode my CB125S to a dealer when I was 15 (they'd give you a MC license at 15 in California back then) and asked for a test ride on a CB400F and they gave me the keys and let me take it out! The speed blew my little mind! Compared to the 125 it was insane - so it is all a matter of perspective. My current 400/4 has about 5K miles on it, looks like new and, with the sticky Avons on it, is a pretty decent real world bike. Of course you need to rev the thing like mad to get it to go (but it sounds great when you do) and you can't be too big.
I love mine too!

It is one of my favorite bikes (and I have many).

My boyfriend has an IT. Everytime we go dirt riding, half the people we meet ask him what it is.. Just don't see these around often! But when one is around, you definitely notice.. Can see the 2t smoker coming a mile away

At the moment I'm looking more and more at smaller adventure bikes, like this one:

Or something older/cheaper like this:

With gasprices up to €1.75/l ($8.75/us gallon) and the total overkill of 75hp and more, it seems common sense to go light. 90% of my riding is on smaller roads, and with 50hp out of one cilinder you can make longer travels also :)

I downgraded from a big ADV bike to single slugger. No regrets (yet).

That looks more like mine...

I need to dig it out of the corner of the garage and take some better pics, but here's some older ones I do have. Looks the same though...

I never ride it though, so I suppose I need to pass it along to someone that will enjoy it more so that I can make room for something that I might enjoy more too.

Question of the day? Are there any thumper adv bikes out there for 6'5" people? I love the simplicity of the BMW 650, but damn, that thing is short!!! I owned an XMoto for a year and I loved that little engine. The seat was death though... (like sitting on a 2x4).

I went to a 2013 KLR for just that, simplicity. At 6'1" it fits me well. You can add raising links for a taller fit.

Then I got word that I needed to buy a new bike. I was giddy with excitement. We went over to the HD dealer, and I hopped on the 72. I got about a mile before I realized I couldn't live with it as my sole bike. I also didn't look right sitting on it, I'm just a tad too big to look proportional to the 72. I got bounced right out of the saddle twice, on relatively small bumps.

That being said, a sprung seat on a bike with rear shocks is kinda like wearing suspenders and a belt at the same time, doesn't quite work all the time.

Ended up buying a Wide Glide. Now I wish I had waited just a week, and bought a police electra glide from destination daytona.
I miss the storage of my wing, and it would have been cool to have a radio that worked reliably.

Got you by a couple inches and am happy on my DR. Stock wasn't bad, but I got lowered pegs from ProCycle for even more room. Seat Concepts can fix any seat issue and even has them available 1" taller than stock. Huge aftermarket too.

I know it's old tech and probably boring, but I keep looking up local stock and thinking "I wonder..."

Thanks for the info. Of all the air/oil cooled thumpers, the DR650 is the only one I'd go with. But what about the liquid cooled options?

Is it crazy thinking that I can't get a 50 (or so) horse power thumper that has a nice fuel range (big tank-aftermarket upgradeable but not touratech expensive!!!), a NICE seat for a taller guy (or upgradeable to something that's rideable for 500 miles a day), and lots of aftermarket crap to farkle the hell out of it?

DR fits all except the 50HP part. But ProCycle has a 790cc kit, flowed heads, etc. and just had the first stroker crank made to get it out to around 900cc.
The Husqvarna Terra is the last liquid cooled high HP option I considered, but the first thing that struck me taking it off the stand was it is heavy. The DR has enough power for my uses - commuting, errand running, exploring, and multi-day, multi-state dirt road touring.
