Havent set foot on a boat in 10 years.

You would be blown away by any of the boats in the video; none of them are under 100' and they likely weigh the same or even less then the 65 footer you learned on.

When I got in the game a big boat was 65, a mini maxi was 70 and the maxis were 75 to 80 and everything was done by hand. The rules used to ban any mechanical assistance and in a lot of events that's still true. These boats compete on a special circuit mostly in Europe.

Now the maxi's start at 100 and everything is hydraulic. The Swan 90 I sailed in St. Martin has a captive reel mainsheet winch that is powered by hydraulics. The boat has a PTO off the generator that runs the pump and the hydro tank holds 35 gallons of oil. The system can also run on DC but that's for cruising and emergencies, it doesn't move fluid fast enough for racing. Most of the boats in the video have a small diesel dedicate to the hydraulics.

We raced with a crew of 22 when we could do every maneuver except a spinnaker take town. You can see on in the video, the drop is called a letterbox and it takes every free hand (16 people) on the boat to gather in the kite.

Coast Guard calls off SF offshore sailing races

The Coast Guard called a temporary halt Thursday to oceangoing boat races in the Bay Area in the wake of the April 14 accident that killed five crew members of a racing yacht off the Farallon Islands.

The Coast Guard said the order would affect Saturday's Offshore Yacht Racing Association Duxship Race and a second event, the Singlehanded Sailing Society Farallones Race, scheduled for May 12.

I agree, but the USCGSF is a big deal here and the YRA will abide by what they say. I'm sure it will get a few more crew thinking about 'clipping on' in the future. I have 4 of my customers boats ready for the Duxship race.

Edit: Latitude 38 news on the cancellations

Thing is if they were clipped unlike being offshore there's no guarantee that would have done more than make finding the bodies easier. The first person account makes it sound like after the first wave it was all over. If the second wave was going to put the boat on the rocks the last thing I'd want is to be in the water attached to the boat.

Having said this it may have made a difference but I also think on a round the boys race it could do some harm too.

It was either a freak wave or they were in too close. Either one is no reason to keep everyone else at the dock or in the bay.

What the hell are they going to do the first time an AC70 breaks up at 30 kts?

nothing goes up wind like a chevrolet.

I spent most of my sailing time on a 50 ft gaff riged schooner in the Atlantic. Ocean sailing is a bit differnent.
You are completely on your own. Help is not comming, and in many places cant.

I have two adventure dreams. Off road arond the world, and sailing around the world. Since my bike cant carry a boat.....
