The Coast Guard is on duty to save lives by risking theirs. Take it to CSM.

When I was a kid I used to frostbite in New England.

For those following along frostbiting is winter sailing. We'd have a bunch of short races in the harbor, followed by hot soup in the clubhouse.

The club rule was no sailing in more than 30 knots of wind. This was in February and yes it was cold, even with a wet suit.
Some of the boats were self-rescuing, others needed the "crash boat" to come rescue you. Think cold water ball shock every time you capsize and you get pretty good at staying upright.

Now they cancel races if it's even forecast to hit 30. In August.

After months of projects,I have finally launched my new to me 1981 O'Day 19.I bought her off Ebay for $680 boat,motor and trailer.She hadn't seen water in twenty years.It's amazing what you can do with a buffer on old gelcoat.This pic was shot at the end of launch day as she sits on the mooring.The wind blew SW 10-20 and I was pleasantly surprised how well she sailed...Very stable and quite comfortable.I'm an old catamaran sailor who never would have imagined owning a "lead mine"as a friend calls it.But after about eight years of not sailing I had to get back into the game.It should be a great summer!

Here she is in the backyard boatyard just after finishing the mast caddy setup.I had to replace the cabin doors and interior woodwork.Luckily had a half sheet of 3/4" ribbon stripe mahogany in stock.For years...I think I launched her the next day.

Met this fella last week as he was tendering back out to his cat. It's been parked out there for a month or so. He's visiting some friends who live along the Halifax River as he makes his way north. His generator is in the shop and his stay has been extended waiting for repairs.

Took this pix at sunrise this morning. There are about 2 dozen boats from house to sail parked out of channel between the two bridges - our most common view of the intercoastal. The boat on the left is motoring north.
