Hockey anyone?

Never have closely followed hockey, have really enjoyed the very few games I've attended but other than 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team (USA USA USA USA....) I haven't been able to get at all excited about hockey on TV. So what is up this year, why the lock out? Who is good and who is evil. Should I care.

Jurgen
BTW I lived in SLC for a year and my understanding was the GoldenEagles were the equivilent of triple A ball. What are the Scorpions here in NM?

You should not care. It is no longer a sport, it is a business like all the rest. In the Olympics, it kind of a sport, but like in Basketball, they let pros in.

Women's Olympic hockey is about the best example of the sport, that it, until the US women's team decided to trample a Canadian flag on their dressing room floor before the gold medal game at the 2002 Salt Lake City games.

Yeah, maybe hockey has a future if the fans actually find real hockey to watch during the strike.

We live in hope.

We live in hope.

My home town had two rinks for a population of 1700 people. It was cool, wrestling with skates and sticks. ATGATT wasn't much back then. Ice was the color of blood.

You know, I hope this strike lasts until the game is destroyed and the league has to build it from scratch.

I don't begrudge anyone who makes a lot of coin, but enough is enough.

Cap the top players at 2 mill per season and give the average Joe a chance to bring his kids to the game.

The problem is that the NHL players think they're worth as much as Major League Baseball players or NFL football players or NBA basketball players.
The simple fact is they're not. Their TV contract(s) are a joke compared to the others.
Example: each NFL team receives $75 million a year in TV revenue. They could literally not sell a ticket and still make a profit.
The average NHL team - the TV contracts are negotiated separately rather than as a package deal - receives $2 million dollars.
Do the math. The NHL is fucked.

Uhmm, not so much.

IMHO, anyone, and I mean anyone, who kicks a ball around a field, or bangs a piece of rubber with a stick, or throws balls in a peach basket, who thinks they are worth more than a doctor, or airline pilot, or army grunt, or anyone else that holds precious life in their hands, is sadly mistaken.

I think the GoldenEagles in SLC are (were?) WHL. It has been a long long time since I lived there. Those were fun games. Does anyone know what the Scorpions are here in NM. What would the Baseball equivalent be? Single A, Double A?

Yeah if Rider's numbers are correct and players are asking for Base/Basket/Foot level salaries NHL is fricked, and won't exist any longer. Has it expanded too far -especially w/ frickin cute teams like the "might ducks?" Kinna hard to take a league seriously that goes for that shiite.

I agree with ya on Hockey pricing. I figured a home game for a sport that has, what 30 or 40 homegames a year would be like $25ish. Went to see my folks and thought hey I'll take my dad to an Avalanche game, boy was I wrong--ended up not going. Not worth the price for us non fans.

BTW, found out about the scorps--google is a wonderful thang- they are Central Hockey League which would be considered AA.

Yep up in Colorado both DU (can't spell dumb without DU) and Colorado College have solid programs. Here in NM we only have the Scorps but the few times I've been have been a fun and cheap time.

I've seen a few minor league games...our current Riverkings and the old SouthStars from the 70's. Have never been to a NHL game but would like to one day. It's not football but is rather entertaining.

The OHL can be some good hockey if you're in the area and so inclined. When you heckle them they will actually try to hit you in the stands with the puck. Great fun!

Or you can watch these guys play "Old Time Hockey, coach" over and over again. They're like the Webber boys of hockey. Or are the Webbers the Hansens of ADV
