New Subaru and Honda designs

What is it with the way the new Subaru and Honda cars are being designed? I am talking about the aesthetics of some of the more recent models. I am not talking about their build quality, reliability or performance. They are good cars but the designers have lost the plot. I have previously owned three subaru cars and loved them.

These cars used to look good.... sleek and pleasing to the eye. Now most of them look like the designer has gone on holidays and some person with damage to their frontal lobes (and damage to the right side of the brain) has been let loose in the design rooms.

I can't really speak to the Hondas because I don't see a huge design shift, but I notice a change in the Subarus and I like it. I happen to like the new Outback...the interior is this family man's dream. I like the Legacy GT, too, but the interior is kind of cramped for my taste. It would be a great car for a single person, but not such a great long trip kind of car if you need to carry a lot of crap.

You only need to look at their telscope to realise that they are obsessed:

Just for kicks I went to the Honda website to check out their future and concept vehicles. They really ruined the Odyssey- looks like they pieced together several different concepts that don't go together. Looks like the accord got some minor face lifts as well. The rear end has that ugly/tacky bar across it now...

I'm a big Honda fan- for the reliability, etc, but they just don't make anything too exciting. The Civic Si is a fun little bugger, but AWD and 100 more HP would be even more fun.

I was gonna put a deposit on one, but it just wasn't long enough to get the job done.

Not to stray too far off topic, but what does the Keck Observatory have to do with the Japanese? It's in Hawaii, and run by Americans.

I liked the new 2010 Outbacks so well, I bought two.. One for each daughter. 2.5L premium with CVT. Awesome cars, recently they got 31.5 MPG on a trip at 65mph with the AC running.. Great ride, comfortable, all around good cars. There is a great youtube video showing how the Subi AWD out performs the Honda, Toyota, and VW AWD on an incline of rollers that are controllable to mimic icy surfaces.

I might be wrong, just ask my X...

Talking

The new Outback's interior is only good in the most expensive trimlevel, otherwise it looks like a plastic icecream parlor...
Exterior-wise I do like the new Subie so IMHO it isn't all bad news, but sjees Subaru who was on crack when the new dash was designed??.... Oh, eh when do we get the diesel version??
BTW, my folks have an 2007 Outback and I must say it is a great car to drive!!

Thread is useless without pics, eh?

Fat ass Honda Crosstour. Looks passable here, but borders on hideous in person:

Nobody mentioned Toyotas. Perhaps the accelerator debachle distracted the buying public from this monstrosity. An answer to a question nobody asked.

Last, what about the Lincoln MKT. I wonder is Lincoln marketing knows that 'MKT' is short for 'market'? Anyway, the back end of this looks like a custom made hearse. In person, its gargantuan. Like a rolling cetacean.

The thing about all these is that they look marginally acceptable through photo manipulation. In person, the sense of scale forces you to turn your eyes away, and look for something as agreeable as a Subaru.

I digg the new Outbacks. In fact we are picking up our new one in a couple of weeks. These cars are in high demand around my neck of the woods. As soon as they are offloaded from the transport, they are gone.

BTW the 2.5 CVT versions have Honda trannies in them.

What Subarus are you looking at? They once- and totally on accident made a decent looking impreza- the first generation.

But then they realized their mistake and came out with a nice, ugly bugeye version.

It's been only been up and onward for Subaru design since then. Flying vagina, anybody?
