I own the forester with the 4 banger; it's a 1999.

Issues with the turbo motor worry me about buying a used one.

I like the things and probably are a hoot to drive, but get less than 30 mpg is a no go for me.

I dunno. I got my first subaru--a 2011 forester--a little over a year ago and love it. It saved my ass twice last year on the highway (evasive maneuvers to avoid cars in front that had spun out of control). Plus it can drive through anything. I actually like the design. I liked the old foresters but they didn't have much ground clearance. I'm 6'3 and there's lots of headroom and plenty of cargo space. Looked at the CRV and the Tiguan but felt they didn't really compare and were much more expensive than my base model forester.

If I have enough money and don't care about a back seat (2 big ifs ):

And while the interior is funky the fit and finish is amazing for a sub 20k car:

I consistently get 28-30 mpg on the freeway at 75-80 with my 2.5 N/A and it is reasonably quick. My major wish is for a 6 speed trans, with them tightening up 5th just a bit. There is a very large gap between 4th and 5th making driving around at 50 mph a constant stir it back and forth operation between 2k rpm in 5th and nearly 3k in 4th, no real happy medium. At anything over 80 on the freeway I feel that I am working it too hard as well, nearing 3500 rpm for cruising.

Just put in that six speed with a long highway gear in it to bring the revs down maybe 400 rpm and I would be happy with it.

As far as designs, 2005 or 2006 was the pinnacle of subaru design I feel. Just about every car looked pretty good and had turbo options and available manual transmissions. I would really consider a new forester if only I could get the stick in it.

And bring in those Saab designers from the 9-2x - I love mine and feel they got the impreza wagon right

Maybe its just the wide angle of this picture, but it looks like a helluva stretch to reach the controls on that center screen

Agreed. Nice pair you have there. I have a 2007 N/A sedan and also routinely get 28-30 mpg in all kind of non-city driving. I love driving that car on curvy roads.

Why can't you get a new Forester with a 5-speed? Do they not offer them where you are? I can get one here in California.

Thinking about trading in my 08 Impreza for a 12. I love my car with the exception of the 4 speed automatic. The CVT in the Outback, if it's the same one the Impreza has, is worlds better. If I can keep payments the same and get much better fuel mileage, i'm doing it.

Anyone know if they improved the headlights?

oh I wish those were mine - just a nice example I found online at some point. Mine is a silver 2.5i in nice shape. As far as the manual forester, I just went on the website and it appears you can still get one with a stick - before buying my 9-2x I asked the sales guy if he could get me a stick forester to try out and he told me they didnt make it anymore. Kind of pissed to find this out now, but I do enjoy buying used and having a pretty minimal monthly payment versus buying brand new.

I really like the look of this car.

If I had more money than sense, I'd buy one and figure out how to drop an Acura RSX engine in it.

When my Jetta wagon TDI killed itself by trying to have anal sex with a Toyota Camery I went looking for another small wagon, I looked at the new Outbacks but was turned off by the size and gutless performance I found a 06 Outback and the difference is amazing, I just love this thing its the best snow & ice car I have ever driven

Saab definitely did a good thing with their front ends.

Nobody shot themselves worse than Lincoln. I think they sold like 9 MKTs.

If you believe rumours, there is a 200hp version coming. I heard turbo charged.
This years Honda dealer meeting is coming with a confidentiality agreement, first time ever. I think (and hope) Honda has some big things coming.
