Sound system help!

Yup.

I need one.

I have a 1600 sq ft loft (concrete), mostly open plan. I dont have a TV (choice) but really want a really high quality sound system that doesnt cost a fortune that will play CD's and my iPod.

I went into Best Buy to look around and got totally befuffled! Its sooo long since I bought a system, I think I might be from the planet Zogg.

Any advice?

A system in a box?

Wireless speakers or wire?

Any systems you can recommend for my requirements?

Note: my tastes are eclectic - everything from classical, jazz, Zydeco, punk, new age, rap, and everything in between.

I figure spending a small fortune wont inprove the sound that much ?

It's really all going to depend on how loud you intend to play it. With common walls and neighbors nearby, that means, 'not very.'

Get whatever sounds and looks nice to you. It's just not going to matter that much when you can't turn it up to reasonable levels.

to bose or not, if you're not an audio dork, then something along those lines will probably be fine and more aesthetically pleasing.

Spend 90% of your budget on speakers, not more than 1% on cables and worry less about amp and source player than about your room layout.

Someone will be along shortly to show that I'm wrong, though.

I think your intent is good but, I don't know how practical the actual numbers are. 9% for the receiver? Even a basic bookshelf receiver is bound to be nearly $100...that would mean he's spending a grand on the system? That's overkill IMO (and I'm the guy who justified a pair of $2700 car amplifiers).

Have you considered buying used? I'll bet you could get some really cool stuff on the used market (craigslist). If you can see it and hear it, it's good. Not much rocket science there. $500-1000 would go a long way there. Maybe a couple of mini-tower speakers or even something really tweak like some smaller electrostatic speakers?

Don't call me out on my numbers, I posted this before my first coffee
You're right of course, I just wanted to give a perspective in relative value of actual sound reproduction.

Bob, it'd probably help to learn about your actual budget. "High quality" can mean a lot. Me, I'm a cheap fuck and claim there wasn't much improvement since the '70s. Buying used or vintage makes a lot of sense.

Part of the challenge is going to be using an iPod as a source unit. I'm actually pretty disappointed in the quality when connected to a full sound system. See here on that subject:

Craigslist Bob. There are tons of good deals in DFW area. I have scored some good old vintage gear off of there at a decent bargain.

And score a decent DAC I-pod MP3 dock

I scored all this off craiglist except 1 amp (and the TV) for less than $1200

WHAT?! TURN THAT NOISE DOWN!!

Hi Bob! How's TX?

I don't have anything to contribute other than to say 'buy used' and stick with the name brands.

I have one of those plug into stand alone Bose units. Its actually pretty good, but not 'beefy' enough for my living area - which is quite big and has wood floors. It doesnt play CD's though...

I was figuring that. I used to have an old system - Yamaha amp, Dual deck, and Tannoy speakers. It was great when wound up, but no good for a community loft.

No, but open to it.

Holy crap, Dan. That looks like mission control at NASA!

I forget to add, small size is good

Bob, how serious are you here?

Going to Best Buy is not a good place to start.

If you have the space avoid combining Home Theater and 2 channel, these universes were never meant to be together.

How much of a budget are we talking?
