I'll probably begin this stage of the project at the end of this years riding/camping season unless there's a big issue with the combo in it now.

The addition of this will no doubt require new springs in the front and possibly a new axle.

The C will fit between the framerails as this has the standard 34 inch frame width but it's 4 inches longer.
My first inclination was to move the radiator forward a bit and use electric fans to cool it but now I'm thinking move the engine back and just shorten the drive shaft "again".
A new driveline will be needed anyway cause at this point the small drive shaft will soon become the weak link if it isn't already.

Another point of interest will be axle ratio, I don't have a tach but the 5.9 in my truck had a high idle of 3000 rpm, the 8.3 has a high idle of 2400 rpm. This will be an issue.
My main reason for this engine swap "other" than the fact that bigger is better when it comes to heavy duty engine's is that to perform the way I want the wick is just going to have to be tured up too much on that little 5.9.
With enough fuel 5.9's are capable of amazing performance but I wan't some thing that will have enough power to keep up with traffic while towing but keep the rpms low enough to be relaxed in the cab.

I belive a 300 horse 1000+ ft lb C will do this.
I have my doubts of the longevity of a Dana 80 rear with this much torque so a 2 speed 14,000 lb rear may be in it's future as well.

I've been told that with enough power a 2speed might not be needed but we'll see, more ratios are better as far as I'm concerned.

Stay tuned!

I know you mess with big stuff, for a living. But, I find it all intimidating and think I'll just stick to motorcycles and bicycles.

This is my first project of this magnitude but I'd do it all over again.

My problem is I have to do thing's my own way.

Much to my wife's dismay. (at times)

But with a different engine, transmission, and body style.

BTDT on many home remodeling projects. Never with anything that large, heavy, and complicated though, Keep it up!

Not yet, 643 Allison's with driveline brakes are a rare breed.

How much more will the new combo weigh than the current configuration?

And how heavy is the trailer?

In the neighborhood of 1000lbs heavier than the 5.9/542.

Trailer has a GVW 15,900lbs
