World's Edge, Western NC dual sport ride
World's Edge, Henderson County, NC
A two-parter: Day one was Thursday evening (met at 5:30 PM) day two was today (Sunday). Thursday, we headed out Hwy 64 (from Hendersonville) towards Edneyville. The state of NC is aquiring some property for a state park (an addition to Chimney Rock, I think) and we have heard that this area won't be able to be ridden much longer. So, we wanted to ride it before it might be closed. We had three KLR 650's and two Sherpa's. Here is 'World's Edge'. That was our first stop. ![]() ![]() Pretty funky little trails, quite technical at times. Quite rocky to the point of old stream beds in places. This is one of the easier sections: ![]() So, we're trying to get off the mountain (will be dark soon) and we come up on this tree across the road. Even though many different engineering theories were tested, we couldn't move it. Then ncvulcan says, "I'll just lean it over and go under" ![]() Well, doh, that worked pretty well. So, then mdrake, ![]() And Blastfurnace....did I mention it was hot? Only about 87 degrees in the woods. Lotsa sweatin' going on..... ![]() We know we're near the bottom of the mountain. But, I think we were all surprised when we popped out right here: ![]() Lake Lure parking lot near the big hotel on Hwy 9/64. There were god-awful "NO TRESSPASSING" signs everywhere where we came out, but nothing on the way down. I guess no one figured some crazy bike guys might find the way down, only up. Anyway, it was good that we made it out of the woods before dark, as some of those trails were pretty tough. Since darkness prevented us from fully exploring the area, we made plans to do it again today (Sunday). So after a breakfast meeting at 8:30AM, we tackled it again. In attendance today: Rooster, Blastfurnace, Vic, Chris (Vic's friend) and Mel. That's 2 KLR's and 3 Sherpa's. I don't think I've ever ridden where Sherpa's were in the majority. It was really hazy today, and we smelled smoke on the way up to the lookout. We even met a fire dept. truck up there. They were trying to see where all the smoke was coming from. Not a great view today.... ![]() ![]() The tree again.... ![]() ![]() Big ol rocks as big as houses... ![]() Sherpa's in the woods. This is in the vicinity of Sugar Loaf Mountain. ![]() Upscale NC mountain vacation home.... ![]() Nice overlook! One direction.... ![]() and the other..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I recently spent a week riding out of Andrews and Maggie Valley. NC has some great riding. I see from your report that I still have a lot more more exploring to do.
Thanks for posting |
