I bought this sturdy, folding aluminum table at Walmart for about $23:
![]() It's a good size, but the idea was to modify it to fit nicely on top of my Pelican 1550 top box: ![]() Although after the mods it's low, the height will be good for use with a camp chair, and certainly better than placing the kitchen on the ground: ![]() Mission accomplished: ![]() Cheers, all! I use my Vario top box. I'm already carrying it and the top is "flat enough" for most things.

I have the same table, unmodded, which I take along sometimes in the Ural if I know I'm going to be camped in one spot for multiple nights. How did you mod it? Just chop the legs?

First I changed the pivot points of the table-top halves, took 5/8" off each one, which saved me 1.25". Then I removed the two outer slats from the table top, saving another 2.5" off the folded length. I then chopped the legs and brought the cross members (and feet) up as close as I could to the tops in the flat, folded position. Last I moved the pivot point of the legs.
Final dimensions are 18.5"w x 14.5"d x 12"h open, 18.5" x 16.25" x 2" folded. It took a little time, but I got what I wanted. I don't much care for the cookie-cutter solution anyway. ![]() I should mention I only included the Pelican case in the photos to show scale, not to indicate that I intend to use the table as a suitcase stand. I like the table, and I'll probably get another and keep it original-size and in the Land Cruiser for 4-wheel desert runs. If you want a more detailed description of my mods let me know. Cheers! Diy! :)
I've built this...
http://www.instructables.com/id/Make...s-in-the-park/ it's cheap, stable and small when folded. But most of the times i use an aluminium plate placed between sidecases. Like the one sell by touratech, but much cheaper

I picked up a couple of the GSI/LL Bean type tables at Target last year when they were clearing them out. They worked well. Chad |

I have the REI rollup aluminum table (http://www.rei.com/product/765280/rei-camp-roll-table) that I take car camping. I guess I could take it bike camping, but I don't.
This, however, is one of the more useful camping items out there. http://www.amazon.com/Tricam-WP-20-B...186808&sr=1-10 It's a low table, stool, bench, work bench, whatever. I have a different brand that wasn't $60. Actually, I have several. If I take the truck camping, I'll end up having more than one with me. It would suck on a bike.

Can you show pictures of the side angle along with new pivot point at the sides. And another showing the bottom closed and fully extended.
Thanks. I liked way you did. I don't quite like the 18" REO Roll-Top Table, it's the packing I don't like. I want to make it even smaller and low eight to fit my Kermit Chair. |
