lol, yes forcing metal through a hole smaller than its diameter is less gentle than taking a dremel tool and removing the material so the pin comes out much easier. Sure.

Ya, I always ground the tops of the pins when splitting chain. They practically fall out then. But it was always with a bench grinder with a chain already off the bike.

I have never riveted a chain. I think I have a riveter too, just never had to use it. I've never had a roadbike long enough to wear a chain out.

I've always had a new chain riveted on because I have lost clip-style links twice. Luckily I've caught it on time both times without the chain coming apart. Would be interested to see how you would safety wire the link. Pictures????

Thing is, that metal went through the hole before it was swaged over on assembly. So all you're doing is making it bend back to its original size. No damage done to anything. And you don't have bits of grinding wheel and metal flakes everywhere.

That just doesn't seem right to me. Is the pin that is swaged over softer then the side-plate with the hole in ? Logic would suggest there will be some damage if you don't grind the top of the pin.

Anyway, this is a somewhat superfluous discussion since the days of taking a chain off and boiling it etc. to clean/lube it are long (long) gone with good O ring chains.

I went through my track bike pics, but, don't have one of the link.

Simply run the wire around the plate of the master link and tighten.

I've never lost a clip, wired or not.

Most of these factory chains are actually endless -- there is no master link per se, they're simply manufactured to be a continuous loop and installed before the swingarm.

As others are pointing out, don't worry about removing it until it's spent (whereupon you can just grind through one of the links). Personally, I don't even bother to clean the chain, I just lube religiously using the Dupont Teflon Multi-Use stuff. My XC still has the original chain and has about 31,000 miles on it -- I'll be replacing the chain soon though just so I don't have to do it partway into the riding season.

When you do get a replacement chain, definitely get the kind with the rivet master link.

On my Transalp in the 90s (only other bike where I had to change chains myself) I got an OEM chain as a closed loop in the right size, took the swingarm out, installed the new chain, swingarm back in - took three hours overall. Can't imagine I'd be that much faster without taking the swingarm out ... A lot of time is spent swearing when trying to get the front sprocket off ...

Well I happened to be close by my Triumph dealer today and dropped in about the chain and master link. Triumph dosent even offer a master link. I bought a can of Motorex chain cleaner in order to clean it while its on the bike. I will stick with the original OEM chain until I run out of adjustment. Then its on to a DID. Thanks for all of the input.

No where near my first road bike, but it IS my first adventure bike and thought the chain would have a master link due to the need to clean and service more than a regular road bike i.e. dirt, mud, sand, and added stretch from suspension travel. I use a product called cold wash that will clean the chain without harming the orings. I don't actually soak it overnight. I just soak it long enough to clean it with a plastic brisle brush while its in the bath. If all you do is lube it and never clean it the chain will get stiff from road grime, dirt, etc.

I just wanted to add that a chain breaker tool pushes the pin right out. I know about 20 years ago chain pins would not push out like that, but they do now. For my 450exc, I had to buy a chain with too many links & remove a few. The pins came right out with very little effort. Buy a good chain breaker tool & check it out. It's easy.

who cares if its gentle. a chain tool is quick and easy. got to be faster than messing with a dremel.

and you are going to throw the chain away afterwards anyway, so a bit of damage (a very small bit by the way) means little.
