Wow Alcan Rider, those pics are awesome! It was your pics like those that made me want to do the ride this spring! A few humble entries from my one and only trip up and back.

Silly I know but these guys were everywhere getting warm on the road when I left Prudhoe.

Sure, why not. Other riders get to see the same scenes I do, just not always at the same time, or with the same light.

The toughest part of the Dalton seems to be where they are doing road construction. Otherwise it was in good shape (not that I have a reference point).

Thanks again,

Glad you've enjoyed it. It's more than the destination, isn't it?

Thanks for posting those. You've got some really great photos there. The ones you shot into the sun are particular favorites of mine, like this one -

But the evening shadows in this one are really beautiful too -

If you have some more, bring 'em on.

July 4, 2008 8:00 PM Pump Station 4 sits on a hill, reminiscent of a castle overlooking its owner's vast estates -

July 4, 2008 9:00 PM The Kuparak River, hardly more than a small stream just below its highway crossing, flows clear and cold across the Arctic tundra -

May 30, 2010 4:00 PM After a long, cold winter, it takes many weeks for the thick accumulation of ice on the streams to melt away - usually just in time for the following winter -

July 2, 2010 3:00 PM Looking southward toward the Atigun Valley, with an apparent deluge hitting the road ahead -

July 2, 2010 Close to the bottom of Ice Cut, access to the docile-appearing Sag River -

July 4, 2008 9:00 PM Another view of the easily-recognizable Slope Mt from around Mile 299 -

July 1, 2010 6:30 AM From a vantage point just above the first switchback on the climb up the south side of Atigun Pass, looking back whence the road came -

July 1, 2010 6:30 AM Shortly after leaving the parking area at the top of Atigun Pass, this scene overlooking the upper Atigun Valley presents itself -

...and about halfway down, the view now includes the Haul Road in the bottom of the valley -

July 2, 2010 2:00 PM Next to the highway's Ice Cut, the pipeline makes its own descent from the plateau to the Sag River plain -

AlcanRider, I very much appreciate you sharing your pictures with us, they are excellent.

I rode the Dalton only once in my life, one month ago, and I am still deeply impressed. I will come back to do some hiking in the Brooks Range and on the North Slope. This place is like a dream, it is pure heaven. I love it.

Thank you. I know what you mean about the area. After my first trip all the way to Deadhorse I decided that I had to go back and just camp along the Haul Road for about a month to experience it fully. Haven't done that yet, at least not all at once, but have probably spent over a month total with all the various trips up and down the highway. And I find myself wanting to get back up there again, right now, to just enjoy the remoteness and the solitude... and the beauty. Even in nasty, windy, rainy conditions, I like it. But it's a lot easier to take good photos when the weather is nice.

Great pictures, thank you for sharing. Not that I really needed it, but my appetite is wetted even more now!

Planning on doing Key West, FL to Prudhoe Bay for summer 2011.
