Still it did its job....the main air filter (in the background) still looks brand new.

At the end of the day we actually did more than we thought we would. The original plan had been to only to go as far as the Arctic Circle, but we decided that we really wanted to see Atigun pass.

In the end it worked for us and it means we still have something new to do the next time

Yes, it is a HUGE place!. Especially when you consider its a 1000 mile trip just from Fairbanks to Deadhorse and back!

I rode a 950 and had no idea what its range was. But, we rode with the fuel tanker GS of Frijole, just in case. I also carried an extra gallon of gas. We did find out that the 950 would make it from Coldfoot to Deadhorse, barely. Coming back, with the weather we hit north of Atigun, i may have gotten worse mileage, or maybe Deadhorse had crappy gas, but i had to put the gallon in at the top of the pass.

Good luck on the next trip.

You can learn a lot by talking to the road crews.

Haul Road Rememberances

Parked up beside the Koyukuk River at Wiseman Creek in Wiseman, AK en route to Deadhorse.

Heading north solo at 0400 at Atigun Pass, July 11th 2009 socked in with fog near the top and muddy most of the way over the Pass.

At the top of Ice Cut. Weather had finally cleared for me on the Haul Road.

Another year, another trip completed, and another batch of photos to start posting. Beautiful, hot weather over the Memorial Day weekend yielded great photo opportunities. This is just one example -

Don't work there, just love the country... and the ride through it. This area is the essence of Alaska to me, and one of the reasons I've spent the past 54 years calling the state my home.

Even with this brand new pavement north of Coldfoot, the Dalton is still a wilderness highway -

Nice shot from Finger Mt.

I've always liked the way the road makes that long S curve across the pipeline there. Now how about a few more.

Mackey Hill, Mile 87. Another one of those that's a blast when the road is dry, no fun when it is freshly graded and sloppy -

A nice stretch of pavement around Mile 152, past Grayling Lake -

Chandalar Shelf. There's a long, steep climb from about Mile 236.5 to get here, then 4 miles or so across the Shelf to the beginning of the climb up Atigun Pass -
